While Creature Commandos has kicked off the DCU on a strong note, fans have pointed out plot holes and minor inconsistencies that make the show feel a bit sloppy. One such issue lies in Nina’s tragic backstory, which looks like one that could have been avoided had James Gunn not forgotten about it.

One of the characters from the show was Nina Mazursky (portrayed by Zoë Chao), a mutant with aquatic features who is only able to breathe through a containment suit on land. At birth, an abnormality caused her to emerge with her lungs on the outside of her body. She was born to Edward and Lily Mazursky.

Nina’s father Edward was a scientist working in Star City who created a special machine to ensure that his daughter survived after birth. Her mother Lily left the family after seeing her child go through such things. In his desperation, he experimented with amphibious DNA which did not go well and Nina was transformed into a human-amphibian hybrid, requiring a special water tank to breathe.

Her life became even more difficult after this which led to her running away from her home and sneaking into the sewer system where she lived alone for months. Then, she was apprehended by animal control and lost her father when he was trying to break through the police barrier to get to his daughter.

The loophole here, as pointed out by a Redditor, was that the abnormality in Nina’s body should have been caught in an ultrasound. Even if Edward and Lily wanted their child’s gender to remain a secret, there is no plausible explanation for why the doctor/sonographer could not have spotted the lungs growing outside her body during an ultrasound checkup.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, the 20-week ultrasound scan can check the development of the fetus’ organs and body parts, and detect any congenital defects. Had the defect in Nina’s body been detected while Lily was pregnant, perhaps her father could have developed the machine for her breathing before her birth. However, James Gunn seems to have missed this possibility.

For those unversed, the animated TV show Creature Commandos follows the story of the eponymous DC superhero team of monsters. Led by Rick Flag Sr., the team is assembled and given a task by A.R.G.U.S. director Amanda Waller. Their mission in this season was to stop the Amazonian sorceress Circe and the Sons of Themyscira from invading Pokolistan.

In an interview with DC.com, actress Zoë Chao shared insights into how her character, Nina, perceives herself and her role within the team.

She’s such a resilient being, and it’s been so hard for her to find her place. Being an aquatic being, she’s half-human and half-fish, and was really rejected by the human world as a freak. I kind of feel like it’s the first time she gets to relax in a way, even though the stakes are very high. I think when she’s with the team she doesn’t feel like a freak anymore because they’re all freaks.

Chao further said that being on the team gave Nina’s superpowers the chance to truly shine, and also become evolve into the most authentic version of herself throughout the series.

Creature Commandos is available for streaming on Max.
