Cult-hit Hostel Franchise is Getting the Series Treatment With 2024 Best Actor Oscar Nominee in Lead Role
As the entertainment world is leaning more and more towards streaming and the adaptation of movies into series is becoming more common, yet another hit movie franchise is on its way to becoming a series. This movie franchise is the cult-hit horror film series Hostel.
The film series was launched in 2006 with the eponymous movie, which was a commercial success even though the critics were not too impressed. That said, the lead role in the upcoming series will be played by Paul Giamatti who was nominated for the Best Actor Award at the 96th Academy Awards.
Paul Giamatti to Play the Lead Role in Hostel TV Series
Yale School of Drama alumni Paul Giamatti‘s breakthrough role was Kenny Rushton in the 1997 biographical comedy film Private Parts. He went on to star in supporting roles in My Best Friend’s Wedding, Saving Private Ryan, and Man on the Moon. Additionally, he has appeared in lead roles in movies like Private Life and The Holdovers.
The Hollywood Reporter recently reported that Giamatti will lead the Hostel TV series. The original creators of the horror film series Eli Roth, Chris Briggs, and Mike Fleiss are returning, which will ensure continuity in the franchise’s vision and tone. Fifth Season, the studio behind the successful Severance series on Apple TV+, will be producing this TV series.
For those unversed, the Hostel film series focuses on a group of young travelers who become victims of a sadistic and gruesome Slovakian criminal organization. The story revolves around a sinister business that kidnaps tourists and sells them to wealthy clients who pay for the opportunity to torture and kill them.
The TV series will reportedly be a “modern adaptation” and an “elevated thriller” that’s also a “reinvention” of the horror franchise. While Roth and Briggs are set to pen the script, they will also executive produce the show alongside Fleiss.
Fans are Reacting Positively About the Horror Movie Franchise’s Expansion with a Series
Giamatti and Roth first met each other when the latter was working on the production of the first Hostel movie while the Downtown Abbey actor was working on The Illusionist. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Giamatti said:
Eli was shooting Hostel in Prague and I was shooting The Illusionist and I met him. We talked about me actually killing somebody in that movie but it never panned out.
Maybe this is Giamatti’s chance to kill someone on screen. Whether that will happen or not remains to be seen, but fans are quite thrilled to have the Golden Globe winner star in the upcoming series, which does not have a platform attached yet. Here is what some fans had to say:
Whether it is love for the original film series or Giamatti’s involvement in the upcoming TV series, the news has certainly landed well with the potential audience. That said, there are no details regarding the plot so far, so fans will have to wait to find out.
The Hostel film series is available for buying and renting on Apple TV.
