Fans who were still waiting to see Cyberpunk: Edgerunners land a season 2 renewal are going to be disappointed, and for once it’s not because Netflix axed the show. Rather, in this case, CD Projekt Red admitted that there really never were any plans for a season 2, and that has not changed even now, given the success of the series.

In an interview with TheNeonArcade, Bartosz Sztybor, the writer and producer of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners confirmed that there were never any plans for a season 2, and the project was always meant to be a one-off.

In an interview with Bartosz Sztybor, he was asked if there were any plans for a season 2 renewal of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners or even an extension, but Sztybor firmly snuffed out any hope for a Season 1 extension or Season 2. He said:

We never thought and we never talked about extending the (show) to add one episode or two epiodes or make another season with these characters. It was always 10 episodes 20 minutes and that’s it.

He further explained that that’s the reason why he is doing four issues in comic books and mini-series to make things more compact and to make one meaningful standalone story. In that respect, it can be said that he has really done justice to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners by making it a standalone story. And it is not just him who has said that.

In an interview with Famitsu, translated by Video Games Chronicle, CD Projekt Red community manager Saturo Honma spoke about the future of Edgerunners, confirming it was always only supposed to be one season. She confirmed:

However, just to be clear, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planned as a standalone work, so there’s no such thing as ‘we are actually working on Season 2 in the background’. Even if we could make more anime in the future, I don’t know if it would be Season 2 or something completely different.

Assuming you’ve watched Edgerunners (spoilers ahead), you probably already know why a second season isn’t planned, since practically every member of David’s crew died, including David himself, and only Lucy managed to escape. Suppose a second season could have followed Lucy on new adventures, but even if Edgerunners came back, it would probably need a new cast and a new plot. And the plan was never that.

What Is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners About?

The plot of Edgerunners centers on David, a young kid who leaves Arasaka Academy and, through his friendship with Lucy, a Netrunner (hacker), gets drawn into the world of Cyberpunks, who are essentially low-level gang members operating in the city.

She introduces him to her squad, and he quickly becomes an indispensable member due to his resistance to having a stolen augment installed. The augment is called the Sandevistan, and it goes around hitting and shooting your foes while attaching to your spine and effectively stopping time.

The anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is based in the universe of Cyberpunk 2077, the notorious CDPR game that had a terrible launch and has been fixing itself ever since. But despite everything, it was evident that the universe they had created was, at the very least, captivating and fascinating, and Edgerunners is delving into that.

Edgerunners was a huge success for all parties involved, including Netflix, CDPR, and Trigger. It’s a stunning, haunting realization of Night City and the world created from the games while being a gorgeously animated, compelling character show as well.
