The 10 Darkest Dexter’s Laboratory Episodes of All Time, Ranked

Genndy Tartakovsky’s Dexter’s Laboratory was made during the Golden Age of animation, defining one of Cartoon Network’s best eras. It built its reputation on rapid-fire slapstick and a boy genius perpetually undone by his sister. But Genndy Tartakovsky’s writers’ room had a taste for the macabre that surfaced often.

This list ranks the show’s ten darkest entries using four criteria: how explicit or unsettling the imagery is, how bleak or unresolved the emotional stakes are, real-world production controversy, and lasting fan and critical consensus that an episode crossed a line. Here are the ten darkest episodes of Dexter’s Laboratory.

10. ‘Filet of Soul’ Adds a Supernatural Twist to a Pet’s Death

The season 2 episode sees Dexter and DeeDee unable to dispose of their dead goldfish, leading its spirit to take revenge on them. The ghost of Fishy begins to haunt the siblings, and Dee Dee is finally dragged into another dimension by the fish. Dexter builds a Ghostbusters-style containment unit to capture the spirit.

The episode later becomes a parody of Poltergeist, with multiple references to the iconic horror film. It’s the mildest entry on this list, with the jokes being genuinely funny and clearly framed as a spoof. A pet’s on-screen death followed by a vengeful haunting is dark territory for a show mostly about exploding gadgets.

Many episodes of Dexter’s Laboratory see Dee Dee invade Dexter’s lab and cause some malfunction that leads to some shenanigans. In ‘Misplaced in Space’, DeeDee causes a teleporter malfunction, which leads Dexter to land in an alien prison, similar to the ones in Star Trek. Dee Dee mounts a Star Wars-inspired rescue, but her forgetfulness sends Dexter straight back to the same prison the moment he’s freed.

A child trapped alone in a hostile alien prison being eyed as literal food is unusually bleak, and the anticlimactic, cruelly circular ending denies the audience any real relief.

8. Dexter Goes Existential in ‘The Continuum of Cartoon Fools’

Dee Dee keeps sneaking into Dexter’s lab, so he seals every entrance he can find. But the segment ends with Dexter finally succeeding, locking Dee Dee out for good and swallowing the key rather than risk her getting back in, only to be overcome with instant, crushing remorse.

Dexter’s monologue comparing him to other classic cartoon characters like Wile E. Coyote and Daffy Duck, who are also constantly annoyed by their nemeses, is genuinely existential and self-aware, especially for a kid of his age. The fact that a kid is being existential and bleak, stuck in a loop of failure, is an incredibly dark take for a children’s show.

7. Worlds Disappear in ‘Jeepers, Creepers, Where Is Peepers?’

Dee Dee’s imaginary friend Koosie recruits Dexter to help save another imaginary being, the perpetually grumpy Peepers, after a rival named HuKoChu invades their imaginary world to destroy it. HuKoChu’s attack on Peepers is depicted with unusual, sustained graphic detail for the show.

He’s shown having his energy violently siphoned out of him and is at one point turned visibly inside-out, all rendered in a jarringly anime-inflected art style that clashes with the show’s usual visual language. The episode largely brushes past the horror of what’s happening to Peepers until a last-minute rescue resolves everything.

6. ‘Dream Machine’ Has One of the Most Disturbing Final Images

Dexter goes extremely inward and emotional in ‘Dream Machine’ as he invents a device that gives happier dreams. A groggy Dee Dee operates the controls, but a malfunction (like always) messes up the dream, making Dexter emotional. He becomes vulnerable as he wonders if Dee Dee is smarter than him.

The unresolved, screaming-into-the-void final image is one of the show’s most purely nightmarish sequences, built entirely around a child’s psychological terror rather than physical slapstick.

5. Dexter Awakens a Kaiju in ‘Last But Not Beast’

Dexter goes to Japan as an exchange student, but then accidentally awakens a kaiju named Badaxtra. The monster proceeds to lay waste to the city, forcing Dexter to reveal his secret lab to his parents and enlist his entire family, Monkey, the Justice Friends, and Mandark in a desperate last stand.

After the ordeal, Dexter wipes everyone’s memories, with only Dee Dee remembering what happened. A city-leveling monster attack is dark enough on its own, but the ending compounds it: the emotional payoff of the whole special is systematically erased from everyone’s minds except one character, denying the story any lasting resolution.

4. ‘DeeDeemensional’ Started the Series With a Dark Atmosphere

The series premiere sees Dexter and Dee Dee ambushed by a fanged, tentacled monster that has crawled through an interdimensional doorway Dexter opened. As lasers and bombs fail, the creature seizes Dexter and begins visibly devouring him alive, with small digesting organisms shown moving inside its translucent gut while he’s still speaking.

The graphic imagery of Dexter being consumed by the monster is one of the goriest the show has ever been, with fans still citing it as a disturbing start to one of the most iconic cartoon shows of all time.

3. Dexter Goes Full Coppola in ‘Dee Dee’s Room’

When Dee Dee steals Dexter’s newest invention, he’s forced to venture into the one place he fears most: her bedroom. What follows is staged as a shot-for-shot parody of Apocalypse Now, complete with Dexter delivering hushed, doom-laden Martin Sheen-style narration about ‘the horror’ awaiting him among the dolls.

The commitment to keeping Apocalypse Now’s tone is what makes this one of the darkest episodes.

2. The Initial Finale ‘Ego Trip’ Is Pure Nightmare Fuel

Written as the intended series finale, this hour-long special sends Dexter chasing his own legend through time after robots from the future try to kill him for being ‘the one who saved the future.’ What he finds is bleak: a future where his adult self is a broken, browbeaten office drone tormented by a wealthy, sadistic boss, Mandark.

However, it is later revealed that it was Dee Dee who saved the world, making all the Dexters rage with jealousy. The fact that a fully grown man is so jealous of his sister that he is willing to stake the future of the universe out of ego makes it an extremely disturbing episode.

1. ‘Rude Removal’ Was So Dark That It Got Banned

Fully produced for Season 2, “Rude Removal” was pulled by Cartoon Network before it ever aired and stayed effectively lost for over a decade. The premise: Dexter builds a machine to strip Dee Dee of her rudeness after one fight too many, but the device backfires, splitting both siblings into polite and “rude” clones.

The rude clones proceed to swear at length, censored with bleeps, though the mouthed words are unmistakable, while trashing the house and getting their nice counterparts blamed for it, ending with an unsuspecting Dexter and Dee Dee facing their furious mother and a bar of soap. It finally surfaced when Adult Swim uploaded it in January 2013.
