David Ayer Talks About Being Offered Suicide Squad 2 And If He Will Ever Return To DCEU
DCEU always seems to be in a weird limbo. But now it seems like it is finally chugging along nicely. It now has a good number of movies coming out every year and more projects are continuously being developed. One of the most anticipated movies is James Gunn’s Suicide Squad. It is being said that the movie isn’t a direct sequel to the first Suicide Squad, but it will indeed feature some of the same characters. How it will ultimately be is anyone’s guess but new reports have come out which say that it was indeed offered to the first Suicide Squad director David Ayer first.
David Ayer Was Offered Suicide Squad Sequel
When it was first announced that a next Suicide Squad movie was being made with James Gunn at the helm then Twitter exploded. Social media felt that Ayer was being left out of his rightful place by WB just like Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Zack Snyder were (according to Twitter DCEU stans). But David Ayer has now revealed that he was indeed offered the chance to direct a Suicide Squad sequel but he passed.
Ayer recently talked to Slashfilm about what he is working on currently. Suicide Squad 2 was also brought up in the interview and Ayer was asked if he was offered to direct it. He said:
“I had a chance to do it, but I went another way.”
But he has said that he is still interested in superheroes movies and wants to do it again. Hopeful Gotham City Sirens will mark his return to DC and this time his experience with WB executives will be better than the previous one since the management has changed now.
The Suicide Squad Legacy
The 2016 Suicide Squad was a critical failure but it did well commercially and earned $750 million. But right before the release of the film, there were reports of the studio’s interference on the Suicide Squad movie. At the time, Ayer stood by the movie and was then announced to be the director of the Harley Quinn spinoff Gotham City Sirens. But that movie has been shelved till now because WB wants to see how Birds Of Prey does financially. Yet with a small budget it looks like Birds of Prey will get the Gotham City Sirens sequel. After all Shazam snagged a sequel as well with a measly box office gross so it can be done.
