Deadpool & Wolverine: Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine Has Done What He Was Supposed to do in Logan Before James Mangold Changed the Script (Theory)
There has been a huge amount of buzz around Deadpool & Wolverine ever since it was announced that a third movie featuring the Merc with a Mouth is in the making. Disney’s acquisition of Fox made many characters available to Marvel Studios, that they previously could not use in their movies. The upcoming film will feature cameos of characters from the X-Men movies.
That being said, there is not much news on Marvel Studios’ version of X-Men appearing in the movie so it is expected that the studio will explain their absence. Now, there is a theory that can possibly explain it, but this would set Marvel’s version of the X-Men story apart from Fox’s.
Deadpool & Wolverine‘s Wolverine Might Offer an Explanation for the Absence of the X-Men in the MCU
Hugh Jackman had bid farewell to his character as the X-Men character Wolverine in the 2017 movie Logan. However, when he got a chance to work with Ryan Reynolds and become a part of something as big as this new movie, he decided to don the suit one more time, much to the delight of the fans.
Since the X-Men are just now being introduced to the MCU, the franchise owes fans an explanation for the mutants’ absence for so long. A Redditor named yoyofro25 shared a theory that Wolverine could be used to explain this because the trailer suggests that the clawed mutant let his world down.
According to this theory, Wolverine does not come from a different world. Instead, this variant of the character belongs to the MCU. This would make sense given that Wolverine does not recognize Deadpool when they first meet in the bar so it is likely that this was the first time they met.
This is where the theory claims that perhaps the other X-Men characters have not shown up in the MCU yet because Wolverine killed them all off in the past under Cassandra Nova’s control. This has resulted in him being traumatized and drowning his sorrows using alcohol when Deadpool comes to recruit him.
Wolverine Was Supposed to Kill the X-Men in Logan
Logan was loosely based on the comic Old Man Logan as much like the comic, the film featured the titular character in an old and weary state, living in a darker and desolate world. However, the themes and other elements of the two were very different.
One of the many differences was that in the movie, Dr. Charles Xavier is responsible for the accidental death of numerous X-Men characters. It happened because of a degenerative brain disease he was suffering from, which led him to lose control over his powers. On the other hand, the comic book’s storyline sees Mysterio tricking Logan into believing that the X-Men are attacking him. So, the clawed mutant killed them. By the time he realized his mistake, it was way too late. Consequently, he swore off violence and became a pacifist.
Deadpool & Wolverine is scheduled for release on July 26th and Logan is available for streaming on Disney+.
