In the Demon Slayer anime, Kagaya’s animosity with Muzan reached a breaking point during the fourth season finale. In an attempt to weaken the Demon King, the leader of the Demon Slayers sacrificed his own life, as well as the lives of his wife Amane and daughters Hinaki and Nichika.

An X user, @knyesta, posted about the nature of Kagaya Ubuyashiki, and his sacrifice couldn’t get any more tragic. According to the post, Ubuyashiki’s wife Amane and their two daughters were aware of the sacrificial plan. In fact, they needed to be there for Muzan to drop his guard, and the girls didn’t want to be apart from their father. They chose to stay with Kagaya and Amane to the very end.

Tamayo, their demon ally, had the opportunity to inject Muzan with a poison that transforms demons back into humans, thanks to Kagaya’s scheme to blow up the Ubuyashiki home.

The Stone Hashira, Gyomei Himejima, stated in season 4, episode 8, that he and Kagaya thought that the only way to beat Muzan was to expose him to sunlight. While the poison worked in the closing seconds of a pivotal battle, the cost in terms of what was given up and how it affected Muzan was far from equal.

Why Was Kagaya Ubuyashiki’s Sacrifice Necessary?

Kagaya Ubuyashiki admitted that he was at death’s door when Muzan arrived to kill him. His sickness had spread beyond manageable amounts and he was completely bedridden. His physician told him six months before, that he would die within a few days, but he persisted just for this meeting.

The Ubuyashiki clan was blessed with the gift of intuition, which meant they could predict immediate future events to an extent. This time as well, Kagaya was prepared for this and he took measures to ensure his meeting with Muzan. As a result, when Muzan was about to kill him, Kagaya blasted himself, his wife, and his two eldest daughters to take Muzan off guard.

This not only set the premise for the final battle, taking Muzan off guard, but it also allowed Tamayo to stall Muzan from getting away. Following the explosion, the Hashiras and other corps members, along with Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke, gathered around the scene of the explosion, commencing the battle.

Kagaya Ubuyashiki’s shocking sacrifice was an internal part of the final fight with Muzan. For the first time, it allowed the Demon Corps members to attack first, which allowed them to gain the upper hand in the battle.

Frequently asked questions

Who dies alongside Kagaya Ubuyashiki in his sacrifice against Muzan?

In the Demon Slayer Season 4 finale (Episode 8, “The Hashira Unite”), Kagaya Ubuyashiki dies together with his wife Amane and his two eldest daughters, the twins Hinaki and Nichika. His three other children, son Kiriya and youngest daughters Kuina and Kanata, survive because they were not present at the residence. The article’s point is that the wife and daughters chose to stay to the very end, and their presence helped lower Muzan’s guard.

Why was Kagaya Ubuyashiki able to confront Muzan despite his illness?

Kagaya was terminally ill and bedridden, his body ravaged by the curse on the Ubuyashiki bloodline, and he was expected to die very soon regardless. He lived just long enough for Muzan to come to him in person. Using the family’s intuitive foresight to anticipate the moment, he lured Muzan close and detonated explosives hidden in the residence, buying the opening the Demon Slayer Corps needed.

How does Kagaya’s sacrifice set up the final battle against Muzan?

The explosion catches Muzan off guard, and in the immediate aftermath Tamayo lodges her fist inside him so he absorbs the anti-Kibutsuji drug designed to turn demons back into humans, beginning to weaken him. This buys time for the Hashira to converge, transitioning directly into the climactic confrontation that the manga and the later Infinity Castle arc continue.
