Denzel Washington’s Sole Condition to Continue Acting After Gladiator 2 Makes Little Sense Given He Hasn’t Worked With Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and More
- Denzel Washington has been in the industry for almost for four decades now, and he is planning to quit.
- During a recent interview, he revealed that a filmmaker that inspires him can convince him to make movies.
- He is yet to work with some of the best directors in Hollywood including Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg.
It is one thing to be an actor and it is another thing to be an actor as good as Denzel Washington. Acting is not the only role the star has taken on in the filmmaking business, with the roles of director and producer also there on his resume. However, there is no doubt that being an actor is what he does best.
When someone is as good as him at what they do, people want them to continue doing it, just like fans are not ready to let go of Washington so soon. That, however, does not stop him from flirting with retirement every once in a while. The good news is that he is not completely ruling out the chances of him gracing the big screens as a character or two, but he has a condition that has to be fulfilled for him to do that.
Denzel Washington Has a Condition to Continue Exhibiting His Extraordinaire as an Actor
Denzel Washington began his acting career with theater performances and made his screen debut in 1977 with the docudrama Wilma. He gained prominence in the industry with his role as Dr. Philip Chandler in NBC’s TV hospital drama St. Elsewhere. Once he started earning fame, there was no looking back.
Out of the 10 Oscar nominations under his belt, he has won 2. The first one was for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of a defiant American Civil War soldier in Glory and the second one was for Best Actor for playing a corrupt cop in Training Day. He is also widely known for starring in The Equalizer trilogy.
His upcoming venture Gladiator II sees him reunite with Ridley Scott, who worked with the star on the biographical crime film American Gangster. Recently, he opened up to Empire about the one condition that needs to be fulfilled for him to continue acting.
There are very few films left for me to make that I’m interested in, and I have to be inspired by the filmmaker.
He mentioned that he was inspired by Scott and the success of their first collaboration was also a factor that prompted him to take up the role in the Gladiator sequel.
Denzel Washington is Yet to Work with Some Rather Great Filmmakers
Back in June this year, Washington had hinted at his retirement during an appearance at the American Black Film Festival in Miami Beach, Florida. He spoke about his future plans and explained his decision to retire from acting soon.
The things that are going on for me professionally behind the camera are as important to me now as in front of the camera. I think there’s less and less time I’ll be spending in front of the camera.
Despite having been in the industry for almost four decades, Washington has not worked with some of the most legendary filmmakers. Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Denis Villeneuve, James Cameron, and Christopher Nolan are some quite well-known directors who might be able to inspire the Mo’ Better Blues star to make a movie or two.
So, all fans can do is keep their fingers crossed that one of these filmmakers comes up with a role that is fitting for Washington and that he feels inspired enough by them to star in the film. Denis Villeneuve’s Dune franchise would perhaps be an interesting one for Washington to star in. In the meanwhile, fans can enjoy watching Washington in some of the projects that he has already lined up, including a film with Spike Lee.
