Despite 20% Reported Pay Gap Jennifer Lawrence Defends Co-Star Leonardo Dicaprio, Says He Brings More Money
We often hear incidents of pay disparity in regular jobs, revealing the gender differences in society. Surprisingly, it is also prevalent in the glamour-filled entertainment industry. A controversy erupted after reports of unequal pay between Jennifer Lawrence and her co-star Leonardo Dicaprio surfaced on the internet. However, the former defended the idea of disparity in a positive way.
Jennifer Lawrence defends Leonardo Dicaprio despite unequal pay
Hollywood actress Jennifer Lawrence is renowned for her quirky replies and impeccable acting skills. She extended her support to co-star Leonardo Dicaprio after reports stated that the male actor received higher pay. While speaking to Vanity Fair, Jennifer Lawrence justified the pay gap and said that Leonardo Dicaprio’s name brings in more box office and she is content with the deal.
“Leo brings in more box office than I do. I’m extremely fortunate and happy with my deal.”
How much did the megastars charge for their roles?
The greater the reputation, the higher the pay. Hollywood’s superstars charge a handsome amount of money for portraying a character on screen.
According to a report published in Variety, the actors are getting magnificent compensation after the onset of digital streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon.
The report mentioned that DiCaprio garnered $30m (£22.5m) for the movie, while Lawrence cashed in $25m ($18.7m), suggesting a 20% lower fee than the former.
While interviewing with Vanity Fair, Lawrence points out the ironic low pay in the workforce.
“In other situations, what I have seen – and I’m sure other women in the workforce have seen as well – is that it’s extremely uncomfortable to inquire about equal pay. And if you do question something that appears unequal, you’re told it’s not gender disparity but they can’t tell you what exactly it is.”
Previously, Lawrence raised her voice against the gender pay gap prevailing in the Hollywood industry. Back in 2015, Jennifer Lawrence essayed a piece for Lena Dunham’s Lenny Letter newsletter citing wage equality. She criticised the pay difference stating the norms of fairness and equality, regardless of the box office performance.
