Despite Being a Guest on FRIENDS Julia Roberts Was Left Heartbroken by “broken, bent, unlovable” Matthew Perry
F.R.I.E.N.D.S is the show that needs no introduction even if it has concluded years back. The cultural phenomenon had an incredible cast of celebrated actors in which two are Mathew Perry and Julia Roberts. The two stars’ relationship went beyond the screen which was unexpectedly terminated by the actor.
Perry’s character Chandler Bing not only broke up with Robert’s character Susie Moss in the show, but the actor unpredictably put an end to their real-life love relationship too leaving Juli Roberts heartbroken.
Mathew Perry Had To Break Julia Roberts’s Heart
The two equally renowned actors were once a lovely couple beyond their on-screen chemistry on the mega-hit show FRIENDS. Mathew Perry played one of the main characters Chandler Bing among the six friends whereas Julia Roberts made a memorable guest appearance on the show.
In his memoir Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, Perry revealed that he was deeply infatuated with Roberts as she was already a high-profile actress in Hollywood. The actor shared that despite her scintillating status, Perry couldn’t hold the pressure of dating her even though the co-stars had strong feelings for each other. Mathew Perry wrote:
“Dating Julia Roberts had been too much for me. I had been constantly certain that she was going to break up with me. Why would she not? I was not enough; I could never be enough; I was broken, bent, unlovable, so instead of facing the inevitable agony of losing her, I broke up with the beautiful and brilliant Julia Roberts.”
The Fools Rush in Star explained that the pressure of feeling not enough for such an incredible actress didn’t let him stay with the Oscar winner and had to conclude their three-month-courtship that began when Roberts was working on a movie in France. Perry had insecurities and a fear of getting rejected by his former girlfriend for being an ordinary actor caused him to leave Roberts heartbroken.

Julia Roberts Was Left Confused and Surprised by Mathew Bing’s Decision
As the actor explained his brief relationship with Julia Roberts, he also mentioned how the actress was startled by Perry’s sole decision to call it quits. The Mona Lisa Smile star was enveloped in a mixture of confusion and astonishment after witnessing what the 17 Again star decided. He wrote:
“She might have considered herself slumming it with a TV guy, and TV guy was now breaking up with her. I can’t begin to describe the look of confusion on her face.”
Mathew Perry also touched on the time when he almost died a few years ago at age 49 and admitted that he had gastrointestinal perforation that gave him immense hardships while recovering. The actor opened up about his struggles and disease to People and said:
“I had to wait until I was pretty safely sober — and away from the active disease of alcoholism and addiction — to write it all down. And the main thing was, I was pretty certain that it would help people.”
Perry shares the potential tragedy that could have left his family in pain. The Birds of America star revealed that the doctors announced only a 2% chance of him surviving. Perry was in Coma for almost two weeks and spent months in the Hospital where he was put on an ECMO machine that helped the Serving Sara star to breathe.
