Despite Fans’ Dismay, Julia Roberts’ Netflix Thriller was Never Meant to Have Closure
Julia Roberts made her television debut in 1987 with a role as serious as that of a r*pe victim in the first season of the series Crime Story. After that, it did not take her much time to establish herself as a lead actress. Her performance in the box-office hit romantic comedy Pretty Woman, in which she appeared as a hooker. The role had been turned down by many actresses including her Street Magnolias co-star Daryl Hannah.
Julia Roberts has become one of the bankable stars in Hollywood with her movies having grossed $3.9 billion globally. Despite this, her most recent movie Leave the World Behind has recently been under fire for the ending making no sense. So, the director took it upon himself to explain why.
Julia Roberts’ Most Recent Movie Depicts Mankind’s Greatest Fear
With a smile that lights up entire rooms as soon as she walks in, Julia Roberts has charmed millions of people worldwide over the past three decades. From romcoms like Notting Hill and Runaway Bride to thrillers like Homecoming and Gaslit, she has done it all and continues to surprise her fans with her skills even after all these years.
The Academy Award-winning actress’s movie Leave the World Behind, released earlier this month (December 8), is a psychological thriller in which mankind’s worst fears in this era, the world coming to an end, are depicted. It shows how both technology and nature seem to have gone haywire and thus, act as tell-tale signs of impending doom.
Julia Roberts’ Leave the World Behind‘s Ending is Perfect the Way It Is
Although the movie has received mostly positive reviews, viewers have complained about the abrupt way in which the movie ends. Explaining his perspective for the movie, director Sam Esmail told Collider:
“I wanted this film to feel like a dream that slowly turns into a nightmare.I was committed to that. That’s the experience that I was committed to giving the audience, and nothing for me ever got in the way of that. So, whenever people are trying to piece together the film in a purely detached, logical way, I think that doesn’t work, and honestly, I don’t think it works with most films. I think a film has to be felt and experienced, and not necessarily thought through in that way.”

That being said, it has to be noted that even in real life, dreams whether good or bad are not really supposed to make sense nor are they supposed to have a closure like a happy ending to a romantic movie. Besides, going by Esmail’s words, if the movie is a dream then its abrupt ending would be like being jolted back to the state of awakeness.
Leave the World Behind is available for streaming on Netflix.
