Did Captain Marvel Just Get Her MCU Name From… Peter Parker?
In the newly released Spiderman: Far From Home trailer, Peter Parker references Captain Marvel, and it’s the first time she gets her superhero in the MCU. The 23rd film in the MCU hits theatres in July this year with Spiderman: Far From Home. This happens to be the third MCU film in 2019 after Captain Marvel and Endgame. Far From Home will be a direct sequel to 2017s Spider-Man: Homecoming. Spiderman: Far From Home will mark the fifth appearance of Tom Holland as Peter Parker. After getting introduced in 2016s Civil War, he joined the Avengers in both Infinity War and Endgame.
Captain Marvel Gets Referenced in New Spider-Man: Far From Home Trailer
Avengers: Endgame also introduced Captain Marvel to the MCU after her debut in the solo film which was set in the early 90s. Carol Danvers met many superheroes including Spiderman. Now in the new Far From Home trailer with some Endgame spoilers, Peter is called by Nick Fury for a mission. However, after playing the friendly neighbourhood superhero in Homecoming, Peter is seen resistant to the idea, suggesting Captain Marvel and Thor for the job.

This is the very first time Carol Danvers has been referred to as Captain Marvel. In her solo film, her Marvel Comics superhero name is mentioned by Nick Fury when he says that “Marvel” is better than “Mar-Vell” but she isn’t called Captain Marvel. Then in Endgame, she’s referenced to as only Carol.
So, how did Peter know this name?
Presumably, Peter didn’t give Captain Marvel that name in MCU, and he possibly picked it up from somewhere. Perhaps the origin of her Captain Marvel name will come later in a Captain Marvel sequel. It’s possible that Nick Fury gave her that name as he’s someone who can connect the dots between Captain Carol Danvers and Mar-Vell. It could also be Monica Rambeau or Maria who gave her that name since they both know as much as Fury does.

No matter where the name came from but it’s kind of strange to have it dropped in an unrelated film like Spider-Man: Far From Home. Captain Marvel was obviously an atypical MCU origin story as she didn’t have a superhero name. It’s possible that we get more insights or explanation in the Spider-Man: Far From Home film. Peter Parker will be working alongside Danvers’ close friend Nick Fury in the film so fans may expect some explanation to pop up.
