Barbie is a romantic comedy film based on Mattel’s iconic doll Barbie featuring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as the lead Barbie and Ken respectively. The movie was announced in 2014, with Amy Schumer initially landing the lead role though she dropped out due to creative differences and scheduling issues, her spot was to be filled by Anne Hathaway before Margot Robbie officially was cast in 2019.
Greta Gerwig is helming the movie along with co-writing the screenplay with Noah Baumbach. Robbie shared with British Vogue how this movie would be different from the general concept of Mattel’s toyline movies, “People generally hear Barbie and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t…’”
Along with Barbie, the actress will be appearing in David O Russell’s Amsterdam along with Christian Bale and John David Washington, playing three friends who find themselves entangled in a murder mystery in Amsterdam.
Barbie is set to release in the US on July 21, 2023, while Amsterdam will hit the theatres on November 4, 2022.
