Disney’s Co-Chairman Doesn’t Think Fans Will Ever Abandon The MCU
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has come under fire from notable filmmakers like Scorsese and Coppola. But notable actors and directors from MCU’s own camp, like James Gunn, Karen Gillan and Natalie Portman have also defended the movies. But the biggest defense has come from Walt disney Studios executive Alan Horn.
Disney’s Co-Chairman Defends Marvel Movies
Disney certainly isn’t going to be shying away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe soon. They are fully confident in Marvel’s ability to deliver blockbusters every time which will keep the parent company rich. After all, all the Marvel movies which were released in 2019 have gone on to gross a minimum of 1 billion. This includes Avengers: Endgame which is the highest grossing movie of all time.
Alan Horn, Disney’s chief creative officer and co-chairman was present in THR roundtable with a lot of other film executives. There he was asked regarding MCU’s future and whether there will come a time when fans will abandon Marvel films. He said that
“The answer is no. If the film has a compelling storyline, if it has heart and humor, two things that I insist on, and it’s terrifically well executed, I think there is an audience. But who knows?”
Marvel Should Include More Diversity To Keep MCU Fresh
Upcoming Marvel movies include 2020’s Black Widow which will feature Rachel Weisz along with MCU veteran Scarlet Johansson. Black Widow will be followed by Eternals in the same year. Black Widow will be MCU’s second movie that has a female lead (the first being Captain Marvel), Eternals is going to feature a prominently gay hero and in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder movie, Natalie Portman will become the Mighty Thor too. Introducing more diverse characters will keep the MCU fresh and keep on bringing new fans to it.
After all, this has been DC’s strategy for quite some time as well. While DCEU might not be in too well in shape but its individual movies are performing well. This includes Wonder Woman, which is the first proper female led superhero movie; Birds Of Prey, the upcoming all-female team up movie; Joker, the dark origin movie which is smashing all kinds of box-office records and more. Perhaps when it comes to keeping things fresh and diverse, Marvel can take a page out of DC.
