“Do you hear yourself?”: Wonka Star Had to Sit Timothee Chalamet Down Just to Make Him Believe He Can Sing
Timothée Chalamet takes on singing, dancing, and playing the piano in Wonka, requiring him to step outside his acting comfort zone. But even surrounded by musical theater veterans on set, the Oscar nominee shockingly lacked confidence in his vocals. Chalamet kept insisting to 14-year-old co-star Calah Lane that he couldn’t sing, forcing her to finally put her foot down.
How Did Lane Boost Timothée Chalamet’s Musical Morale?
According to an interview with Variety,
Lane says, “He keeps on telling me that he doesn’t think that he can sing, but I’m like, ‘Of course you can sing! Do you hear yourself?’ I told my sister, ‘I need to take Timmy and have him sit down and listen to himself,’ and then be like, ‘Now do you think you can sing?'”
Clearly, Chalamet’s young scene partner knew the musical truth that he somehow couldn’t recognize in himself.
Fourteen-year-old Calah Lane, who plays the quick-witted orphan Noodle in Wonka, bonded with Timothée Chalamet over their musical numbers on set. But she was flabbergasted to learn her already Oscar-nominated adult co-star lacked faith in his vocals.
As Lane tells it, “I need to take Timmy and have him sit down and listen to himself, and then be like, ‘Now do you think you can sing?’ And if he says no, he’s gonna continue to listen to himself until he thinks he can sing.”
Lane even cites Chalamet’s solo number “A World of Your Own” as proof of his talent, saying “His voice sounds really good in it.” Hopefully, her sweet gestures helped Chalamet finally recognize his singing abilities. Because as young Noodle says, “Do you hear yourself?” Belting those musical theater notes should leave no doubt.
