Actress and TV host Drew Barrymore, who obtained emancipation from her parents when she was only 14 years old, is prepared to live without her mother. Yes, that has to be the most frank and shocking thing Barrymore, or perhaps any celebrity, has ever said.

In an interview, Drew contrasted her relationship with her mother to those of her neighbors, most of whom have already passed away, with their parents.

Drew Barrymore ‘Cannot Wait‘ For Her Mother To Die

The Drew Barrymore Show host spoke openly about her tumultuous relationship with her mother Jaid Barrymore when she sat down with New York Magazine on Monday. She became more vulnerable than ever before, clearly acknowledging that her mother’s death might make things simpler. She added that she is envious of her friends who had deceased parents.

The actress claimed that unlike McCurdy and Brooke Shields, who she had also spoken to, she did not enjoy the luxury of having her mother pass away.

All their moms are gone, and my mom’s not,” Barrymore told Vulture. “And I’m like, ‘Well, I don’t have that luxury.’ But I cannot wait. I don’t want to live in a state where I wish someone to be gone sooner than they’re meant to be so I can grow. I actually want her to be happy and thrive and be healthy. But I have to f—ing grow in spite of her being on this planet.”

However, the Never Been Kissed actress admitted that she afterward regretted making these statements because they implied that she had any ill will toward her mother.

I dared to say it, and I didn’t feel good,” she added. “I do care. I’ll never not care. I don’t know if I’ve ever known how to fully guard, close off, not feel, build the wall up.”

Barrymore has made public statements over the years regarding the difficult relationship she has with her parents, who split in 1984. She first gained notoriety when she was seven years old. Since then, she has released a number of memoirs chronicling her battles with addiction as a teen, such as 1990’s Little Girl Lost and 2015’s Wildflower.

The actress from 50 First Dates later confirmed what she had said and became enraged at all of the media for misrepresenting her words. “To all you tabloids out there, you have been f**king with my life since I was 13 years old. I have never said that I wished my mother was dead,” Barrymore said in a video posted to Instagram.

How dare you put those words in my mouth. I have been vulnerable and tried to figure out a very difficult, painful relationship while admitting it is difficult to do while a parent is alive and that, for those of us who have to figure that out in real time cannot wait… as in they cannot wait for the time, not that the parent is dead.”

Don’t twist my words around or ever say that I wish my mother was dead,” she continued. “I have never said that. I never would. In fact, I go on to say that I wish that I never have to live an existence where I would wish that on someone because that is sick.”

When she was just 14 years old, her parents granted her freedom. Prior to his passing in 2004, the actress was able to forgive her father, John David Barrymore. The actress admitted that she and her mother have a somewhat odd relationship because they haven’t entirely patched things up since she was a teenager. Barrymore further revealed that she still helps her mother out financially.

Years of estrangement later, Drew Barrymore revealed in 2017 in an Instagram photo she posted on Mother’s Day that she and her ex-momager are in a good place in terms of their relationship. “Proud. my mom and I. On Mother’s Day!” she wrote as the picture’s caption.

The actress earlier clarified her relationship with her mother by stating that she “will always support her.”

Meanwhile, Barrymore is also a parent herself. She shares her two daughters, Olive, 10, and Frankie, nine, with ex-husband Will Kopelman.
