Draco Malfoy, son of Lucius Malfoy and Narcissa Black, is too proud of being pure blood and looks down upon those who are not. He is the prototypical rich spoiled brat who believes that his social position and family wealth warrant him the right to insult and bully those who are poorer than him. As the story progresses, it becomes unclear if he truly wishes to torment Harry or if he is doing it just to comply with his father’s wishes.

For those unversed, in the third movie Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, during a Defense Against the Dark Arts class, Harry Potter and his classmates are taught how to fight against boggarts. Boggarts are creatures that manipulate an individual by transforming into their greatest fear.

While Harry Potter’s boggart turns into a dementor and Neville Bottom’s turns into their Potions Professor Severus Snape, Draco Malfoy’s turn to face the boggart never comes. Had Malfoy’s turn come, there is a theory that the boggart would have turned into none other than his father Lucius Malfoy.

For the first couple of movies, Draco is seen warning off his enemies by saying his father will ‘hear about this’. By the end of the franchise, it can be easily understood that he fears his father more than he loves or respects him. From being pressured into joining the Death Eaters to doing Voldemort’s bidding, there were a lot of things that Malfoy did out of sheer fear of his father which further supports this theory.

In most of the films, Tom Felton‘s character Draco is portrayed as nothing more than a mean bully who torments others for fun. It is not until the last two films that his character shows development and leads to the audience sympathizing with him.

If Draco’s boggart in the third Harry Potter film had been revealed to be his father, the young wizard’s story would have been even more tragic than it is. This revelation would have revealed that behind the facade of the bravado, there is just a boy who is immensely scared of not following through with his father’s wishes.
