It was definitely great news for Marvel fans when the MCU confirmed they are bringing back the Fantastic Four in movies. During the San Diego Comic-Con, they introduced the ensemble cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, including Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. While Pascal will be seen as Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic, Kirby is portraying Sue Storm, aka Invisible Woman, Quinn is playing Johnny Storm or Human Torch, and Moss-Bachrach will portray Ben Grimm – The Thing.
Set against the backdrop of the 60s-inspired retro-futuristic world, Marvel Studios is introducing the Fantastic Four family. The storyline revolves around them as they defend Earth from a dangerous space God named Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). Now, in a recent conversation, Moss-Bachrach talked about how he brought ‘The Thing’ to life on set and whether he added the essence of the comic character in the movie or not.
Ebon Moss-Bachrach on slipping The Thing’s catchphrase into filming
Ebon Moss-Bachrach recently appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live chat show and talked about how he got into the process of becoming The Thing for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Sharing some insights, he said,
I have seen a very crude rendering because it takes a while to build this stuff. They’ve got so many animators working on this. I wear a motion-capture suit [with] two cameras right here so they’re capturing absolutely everything. Every nuance, every expression, every thought in my eye. It takes a while to build it so they’re building it now.
The Lord of the Rings star further mentioned how they shot the Fantastic Four movie at Pinewood Studios, where Andy Serkis‘ motion picture company Imaginarium is situated. He continued to describe how his character was processed in a room called Magic Mirror. Explaining what happens in the room, the actor added,
“They have a room called the magic mirror where you put on the motion-capture suit and sensors and then they set up monitors and you can see, in real-time, a beta rendering…you can see the physics and how big the character is.”
When Jimmy Kimmel asked if the fans would see The Thing smoking a cigar as the comic character did, Moss-Bachrach said, “No”. If not the cigar, then did his character use the iconic catchphrase from the comic book? To that, the actor admitted,
I slipped it in there a couple of times. We’ll see what happens. I don’t have final cut on this one, so we’ll see.
Well, we believe the character is in good hands.
