Playing a superhero role in movies and TV shows is no mean feat. On top of the high-octane action sequences, the actors need to familiarize themselves with the powers and emotional range of the characters. Charlie Cox stepped into Daredevil’s shoes in 2014 and has been in three seasons of the eponymous show on Netflix. With the new phase of MCU, Cox has reprised his role as Daredevil in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk. Most recently, he is seen in Echo, a new Disney+ series.

Daredevil and Echo’s Dynamic in Echo Series

Maya Lopez, aka Echo, was first introduced to the audience in Hawkeye with a small role. Spanning an entire miniseries on the character, Lopez journeys into the wild world of crime and power in New York as it catches up with her as we progress further into the story. On the other hand, the series also features Echo and Daredevil together, exploring their dynamic with a wider lens.

When the series was being prepped, Charlie Cox posed a very important question that nobody else thought of. Being a blind superhero, how was Daredevil supposed to communicate with Echo who is deaf? Showing two superheroes cross paths in the show, it was necessary to pave the way for their shared dynamic. Without communication, the duo had no way to know each other’s thoughts. Sydney Freeland spoke to CinemaBlend regarding the same,

“I would say that Charlie and Vincent got along so well in the Netflix series. They’re both extremely thoughtful actors that cared deeply about their role. And, I think a perfect illustration of that is one, if not the first conversation with Charlie that we had was a question from him. And he said, ‘It’s just been sort of eating at me. Like, if Daredevil is blind and Maya’s deaf, how are they gonna communicate?’ And, we were all just sort of dumbfounded at that moment, because that had never occurred to any of us. So it really got us thinking and it sparked so many conversations just from that one simple question. But that’s an example of how Charlie’s approach is just extremely thoughtful.”

It is very helpful for filmmakers to work with actors who are cognizant of their characters and pose such questions that make everyone think. Cox helped the crew shape the story of the show further and avoid future trouble.

Release Schedule For Echo

Unlike weekly or daily episode releases, Echo released all episodes together on January 10 at 6:00 p.m. PST, or 9:00 p.m. EST. This is similar to Netflix’s release schedule, and Disney+ seems to be experimenting with the release methods with different shows. Marking the first time for the MCU, the series will be streaming on Hulu as well.

Moreover, Echo seems to be a part of the Marvel Spotlight banner which seems to be making projects that can be removed from the MCU continuity. With this move, Marvel is taking a leap and making projects that don’t connect to the larger Multiverse and MCU storylines. Sort of like a trial and error, these series will give the studios a chance to review the success of new characters and if they are worth merging into the wider cinematic universe.
