Seems like everything is far from ‘perfect’ for Ed Sheeran. The English singer has courted controversy for alleged plagiarism. Sheeran is being accused of ripping off Martin Gaye’s 1973 hit song, Let’s Get It On, with heirs of the songwriter, Ed Townsend suing him for copying major elements in Thinking Out Loud. But Ed Sheeran is not at all daunted by the case and has a strong conviction that he’ll emerge as the victor in the case. And if it turns out to be otherwise, that’ll be the end of the road for him.

Ed Townsend collaborated with Martin Gaye in 1973 on a song that would go on to become a hit among people of that generation. Let’s Get It On is a song that transcended boundaries and was praised by people from all sectors alike. And it seems like Ed Sheeran was one of them.

Songwriter Townsend’s legal heir, Kathryn Townsend Griffin, has come forward with the claim that Sheeran’s 2014 single Thinking Out Loud is heavily inspired by the song her father penned down. According to her, the song mimicked the iconic song’s tone and had other “striking similarities” as well as “overt common elements”.

Ms. Griffin’s claims were put to bed by Sheeran, who is resolute to fight this suit to the end. The Shape of You singer is resolved to clear his name from the controversy, as he looks to prepare for an all-out legal battle with the For Your Love songwriter’s heirs.

Mr. Townsend’s entourage has filed a suit for compensation to the tune of $100 million. They are putting forward loads of evidence to back their claims, including a video of the 32-year-old seamlessly switching between Thinking Out Loud and Let’s Get it On in a live performance, which according to them amounted to a confession.

Ed Sheeran is undaunted though. He has not shied away from quashing the claims time and again. The Eyes Closed singer said he found the allegations in the case “really insulting”. He even said at the court hearing, “I’m not gonna swear.”

The singer-songwriter vowed that if the jury does find him guilty, he will be done” with music. He told his lawyer, Irene Farkas,

“If that happens, I’m done, I’m stopping. I find it really insulting to devote my whole life to being a performer and a songwriter and have someone diminish it.”

Only time will tell his fate when the truth will come out in the open.
