Emma Stone Breaks Silence on Gwen Stacy Not Making it to MCU: “I have never heard that before”
When Spider-Man: No Way Home swung into theaters in December 2021, the multiverse-hopping threequel delivered a heartfelt reunion years in the making. With Tom Holland’s Peter Parker joining forces with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s respective web-slingers, nostalgia soared to new heights. However, Andrew’s real-life love interest Emma Stone was conspicuously absent as his on-screen girlfriend Gwen Stacy. Her devastating death in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 made her no less iconic, leaving fans clamoring for Stone’s return.
Was Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy Actually Planned for No Way Home?
In a recent interview with Comicbook.com’s Phaze Zero, Emma Stone was informed that the Spider-Man: No Way Home writers had initially included her fan-favorite role of Gwen Stacy in early drafts.
“No…Is that true? I have never heard that before. This is awesome. Thank you for telling me,” a shocked Stone responded.

She playfully doubted whether “everyone” wanted to see her suit up as a live-action Spider-Gwen.
Clearly, Stone was never officially approached about reprising her tragic The Amazing Spider-Man role for the multiverse blockbuster. But the news left her excited and grateful nonetheless.
Why Was Gwen Stacy’s Absence From No Way Home For the Best?
While Andrew Garfield returned as his version of Peter Parker alongside Tobey Maguire, Stone’s Gwen was conspicuously absent. This was likely for the best.
With its substantial cast, No Way Home didn’t have sufficient screen time to properly revisit such an emotionally heavy character. And Garfield’s searing performance carried the weight of Gwen’s death with poetic impact. Had Stone appeared, her reunion with Garfield would have distracted from Tom Holland‘s central arc.
Additionally, through the multiverse, Gwen could still return in a standalone Amazing Spider-Man 3 movie or Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse film where her story could get full due. Her moving No Way Home absence sets the stage nicely.
What Are the Chances Emma Stone Suits Up as Spider-Gwen Someday?
When asked if she’d ever consider playing a Gwen Stacy variant like fan-favorite Spider-Gwen,
Stone quipped, “Oh my God. If that’s, again, you know, new information. Everyone?!”
She seems open to revisiting the role in some capacity. But Stone smartly remains focused on her current projects rather than banking on ephemeral multiverse possibilities.
Of course, should the stars align, she could make for an epic live-action Spider-Gwen. For now though, just reconciling her fragmented Spider-Man journey already proves plenty emotional. Wherever Stone and Gwen crossover next, their bond will undoubtedly tug heartstrings regardless.
