Emma Stone says she had an asthma attack while filming Easy A

Actress Emma Stone spoke to MTV News back in 2010 where she discussed her movie and went on to elaborate about the fake s*x scene she and her co-star had to film in which they just had to pretend to have s*x loudly at a house party so that the bullies at their high school would think he’s cool. But during filming, the actress had a minor hiccup, which she explained:

“Oh, for the love, I can’t even simulate sex without dying! I had a little asthma attack, without any prior knowledge that I had asthma, during the scene where we had to jump up and down for hours and hours screaming and yelling on the bed. [It] was humiliating, because it was the second day of shooting.”

Stone continued,

“Here’s what it’s going to be like the whole movie, as I’m breathing into an oxygen tank. The crew was like, ‘She’s going to be a real blast. Wow. Amazing. A 20-year-old having an asthma attack.’ “

However, the actress fortunately never needed medical assistance after that. She starred along side Penn Badgley, Stanley Tucci, Amanda Bynes, etc.

“I wanted to play Bella because it felt like acceptance of what it is to be a woman, to be free, to be scared and brave. She’s understanding what it is to be a member of society. The more autonomous she becomes, the more challenged these men seem to be by it.”

The movie is an adaptation of Alasdair Gray’s novel of the same name which the director had wanted to develop since he read it in 2009 as he explained that he had immediately fallen in love with the novel.

Yorgos Lanthimos on his approach to Emma Stone starring Poor Things

During a question and answer round at the New York Film Festival via USA Today, director Yorgos Lanthimos was asked about his approach toward the explicit scenes in the movie, to which he said,

“It was a very important part of her journey. It felt that we shouldn’t shy away from it. It would feel very disingenuous to tell this story about this character who was so free and so open, and then be prude about the sexual aspects of it. So it was clear from the script, and my discussions with Emma, that there should be no judgment.”

He added,

“The same way she learns about language and human suffering and love and science and politics, the same way she should be equally free about s*x and anything else.”

The actress was not at the Film Festival due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. The director, for her performance in the movie, praised, and if reports are to be believed, Stone’s performance as Bella Baxter could land her an Academy Award nomination. He said,

“Emma is unique and extraordinary. You can’t tell someone how to do this. I was just amazed by her.”

Poor Things comes out in December.
