Emma Stone Had a Stupid Reason to Not Play Gwen Stacy in Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man Movie
Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man is one of the characters that MCU fans can’t forget. Emma Stone, who carried off the role of Gwen Stacy in the Amazing Spider-Man movies did not fail to leave an indelible mark on the viewers. Emma Stone’s and Andrew Garfield’s on-screen chemistry in their films was highly praised by both fans and critics alike. However, it’s surprising that Emma Stone was afraid of playing the character, and it was her close and trusted ally Jennifer Lawrence who helped to make up her mind.
Emma Stone was Motivated by Friend Jennifer Lawrence
The Cruella actress, Emma Stone wasn’t completely ready to become a part of the brand-new, successful Spider-Man franchise. While struggling with her choice, she found inspiration in her trusted companion and confidante Jennifer Lawrence. Lawrence and Stone have been friends for a long time. Both originally came together through a mutual acquaintance, Woody Harrelson, who worked together with Stone in Zombieland. Stone is the one who initially reached out to Lawrence. JLaw revealed, upon receiving Stone’s text, “I replied, ‘F*** off,”, as The Hunger Games heroine once told Vanity Fair.
“And we’ve been really good friends ever since.” “I feel like it was our version of The Notebook—365 texts”. “We both really do love each other and care about each other as people, beyond being actors. I support her completely when it comes to work, and I feel the same from her, but I know we’d be friends even if we didn’t do the same job.”
Since then, they have been really good friends. They often exchanged text messages, keeping in touch despite their hectic schedules, until they can eventually find a chance to meet in person.
Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence’s Franchise Dilemmas
By this time, Stone was seen as Gwen Stacy on the screen as Spider-Man’s love interest. At the same time, Lawrence was already leading a franchise as Katniss Everdeen. Lawrence even reveals how hard it was for her to take on the role. She seriously contemplated rejecting the opportunity due to concerns about the overwhelming attention the role could attract.
At the same time, Stone found her situation parallel to Lawrence’s, where she was puzzled about joining the Spider-Man franchise. She learned her dear friend is also muddling with The Hunger Games. She couldn’t help but find it relatable to her situation. Stone once told Access,
“I love Jennifer Lawrence, and I watched a lot of her interviews for The Hunger Games. It was kind of the same thing she was feeling. What scared me was the idea of, ‘What could happen to my life after doing something like this?’ But the part and the process outweighed that fear.”
Emma Stone reveals she felt Jealous of her Bestie
“It felt like a stupid reason to not be part of this—what might happen [and] how [my] life could change didn’t feel like enough of a reason to not play Gwen, not to get involved with this, not to get to act with Andrew [Garfield] or to get to tell the story in a different way.”
Stone says, she even felt jealous of Lawrence earlier in her career. She opens up, saying Lawrence’s profile and her personality threatened her while she was still making a name for herself.
“She may not even know this,” Stone said. “But there was definitely a time early on when I was like, ‘Oh hey, my ego is going nuts. She’s so great and vibrant and talented. I’m screwed. I’ll never work again.”
But Stone realized that there were no reasons to feel envy for her, being best friends and comfort for each other.
