Emma Watson, Who Made $70,000,000 from Harry Potter, Got One More Gift from $9.5B Franchise
English actress Emma Watson rose to prominence for playing the character of the witty witch, Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movie franchise based on J. K. Rowling’s novel series of the same name. She had not acted professionally before but she used to play characters in the Oxford school theatre. It was her theatre teacher through whom the casting agents found Watson in 1999.
Watson being the talented actress she is, impressed J. K. Rowling in the first screening as her confidence was alike to the character she was going to be cast as. Eight castings later, Emma Watson and her future co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint were informed that they were chosen for the roles of Hermione Granger, Harry Potter, and Ronald Weasley respectively.
Emma Watson Retained the Rights to Her Wardrobe
As Emma Watson was cast as a student of the wizardry school Hogwarts, she had to wear a uniform on the set every day of her shooting. There were too many restrictions that she had to follow to maintain her character. She wasn’t allowed to do anything that a normal teenage girl would do while growing up such as cut her hair, paint her nails, wear any makeup or any kind of revealing clothes. In an interview, she said:
“Maybe I would never have been this interested in fashion if I hadn’t played that role for so long and sometimes felt so constrained by being identified with her so much.”
While the $9.6 billion Harry Potter franchise earned Emma Watson $70,000,000, it certainly didn’t give her the rights to her wardrobe so she seized the chance to own it as soon as she could. She has also said that she would often find walking down the red carpet with make-up and full-on dresses unsettling.
Emma Watson’s Sustainable Clothing Promotes Her Activism
Emma Watson not only uses clothing to express her rebellion but also to raise awareness as an activist. Being an outspoken feminist, she was appointed a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador in 2014. She helped launch a campaign called HeForShe which aims to urge men to promote gender equality.
Watson promotes sustainable clothing and even wore a dress made from plastic bottles to the 2016 Met Gala. In 2009, she also collaborated with a clothing line with the sustainable brand People Tree, and in 2020, she joined the board of directors of the luxury brand group Kering to advocate sustainable clothing.
Besides wearing clothes made out of recycled items on the red carpet, the Perks of Being a Wallflower star also owns an Instagram account which she uses to promote eco-friendly outfits. Some of the outfits that can be seen on that Instagram page are from her 2017 Beauty and The Beast press Tour.
