SUMMARY
  • Taylor Swift has been in the music business for years and yet she is accused of not writing her own songs.
  • Swift has slammed these doubts about her songwriting abilities more than once.
  • Much like the Lover singer, Sabrina Carpenter is also accused of not writing her songs.

Taylor Swift might not be mean, but she did not write the song Mean for it to be in vain. With a huge amount of fame comes an even greater amount of scrutiny of one’s talents and personal life. The Fortnight singer knows this better than most. Despite having been in this industry for decades, she has often been subjected to criticism for the same things again and again.

One of these things is songwriting. Numerous musicians in the industry write or co-write their own songs, but some don’t. Swift belongs to the former category and is credited on all of her songs as a songwriter. In fact, she has also written and been credited on other artists’ songs as a co-writer under the pseudonym, Nils Sjöberg. Despite this, she has been accused of not writing her own songs, just like Sabrina Carpenter was recently.

Fame is a tricky thing. It looks like a privilege on the surface, but in reality, it is a multifaceted thing that affects people’s reputations both positively and negatively. Taylor Swift is no exception to this. She is one of the world’s biggest pop stars and has built a billion-dollar net worth solely with her music, and yet faces criticism for not being a good enough musician.

At the beginning of her career, when she was criticized for her abilities, she wrote the Grammy-winning song Mean on her third studio album Speak Now. The lyrics clearly clapped back at a mean critic of hers. In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2019, she said that she wrote the entire album as a reply to all those wondering aloud if she had written her own songs.

That same year, she addressed the issue again during her 2019 acceptance speech for Billboard’s Woman of the Decade Award (via YouTube). Some people still did not seem to get the memo or probably did not pay enough attention. In 2022, Blur frontman Damon Albarn claimed to the Los Angeles Times that Swift did not write her songs. The Lover singer addressed his claims in an X post.

Albarn replied to her post (via X), claiming that a huge part of the interview was reduced to this clickbait comment he made about Swift. He apologized and said that discrediting her work would be the last thing he would do.

On one hand, the media is constantly going on and on about how she keeps making songs about her love life, and on the other hand, she is accused of not writing her own songs. So, maybe it’s high time we start believing that she does it on her own.

Sabrina Carpenter Is Facing the Same Allegations as Taylor Swift

Sabrina Carpenter is the newest pop sensation. She has been around for quite some time now, but it was not until a couple of years ago that her popularity shot through the roof. Her album, Emails I Can’t Send played a huge role in it. Naturally, the criticism started pouring in almost immediately.

During her chat with CBS Sunday Morning recently, Carpenter revealed that her songwriting skills are being doubted.

I think a misperception is that I don’t write my music. I think a lot of people think because I have you know a producer and and co-writers that I love, that I’m sitting in the room on my phone, not writing songs.

The Nonsense singer has written or co-written all of the songs on her new album on her sixth and latest album Short n’ Sweet. It is not surprising that she has been accused of not writing her songs, but hopefully, this belief that musicians do not write their own songs despite being credited will change soon.
