The 22nd episode and Season 5th’s finale, Jake & Amy, wrapped up the character’s on-again, off-again romance perfectly. But what viewers might not know is that the iconic scene where Amy delivers a perfectly timed punchline was an absolute nightmare to film for the cast.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Most Iconic Wedding Scene Was a Real Struggle

In the season 5 finale of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which aired three years ago, Jake and Amy’s wedding was a perfect blend of love and humor. In a touching callback to an earlier episode where Andy Samberg‘s Jake made a funny compliment about Amy’s b*tt, she concluded her vows with a memorable punchline:

Your b*tt is the bomb. There will be no survivors.

This clever line, which referred back to Jake’s proposal, moved Jake to tears and wrapped up their wedding in a delightful way. Melissa Fumero recalls the scene being shot in a single night, around 1:00 am. Clad in a sleeveless wedding dress, she battled the freezing cold on set. She even needed more makeup on her nose because the cold weather made it turn red.

Adding to the pressure, the scene wasn’t filmed multiple times as is typical for big moments in a show. Because of tight schedules, the director, Dan Goor, had to work fast. Fumero told EW that the main feeling among the cast was, “Everybody wants to go home,” though they stayed professional about it.

Melissa Fumero thinks Amy’s punchline is a top moment in her relationship with Jake, showing how well they fit together despite their differences. She told the same outlet:

They bring out the best in each other. Her topping his joke is also a bit of a nod to their earlier relationship, when they were so competitive and always trying to best each other.

It also showed how much Amy has grown over five seasons because Amy from Season 1 would never have cracked a joke during her wedding. The show often focuses on Jake’s growth, but this time Amy has become a bit more relaxed. It’s great to see that even in a significant moment, Amy is still her playful self, joking about something like b*tts.

The actress found the scene incredibly funny and struggled to keep a straight face during filming. Although the wedding night might have been a disaster for some, the laughs from that scene continue.
