‘Everyone knew we had to go to uncomfortable places’: Ana de Armas Says Movie’s S*xual Content is “Inspired”, Rebukes Racists Trying To Demean Marilyn Monroe Portrayal
Blonde, the upcoming biopic of Marilyn Monroe on Netflix, is directed by Andrew Dominik. The movie isn’t even out yet but the trailer has already made the internet go crazy. The movie stars Ana de Armas from No Time to Die and Knives Out as the late screen icon. The trailer has already sparked some controversy as well. While most of the fans are excited and eagerly waiting for the movie to be released, a few are worried that it might be exploitative. Ana de Armas recently talked about her experience while shooting the movie and has even addressed the issue that fans are concerned about.
Netflix’s upcoming biopic ‘Blonde’
Based on a well-known book by Joyce Carol Oates, Blonde provides an entirely fictionalized account of Marilyn Monroe’s inner life in the 1950s and 1960s. With a fantasy bent, it promises to be a lurid, unabashed look at what it was like to be the world’s leading sex symbol during those years. Since Marilyn Monroe’s real birth name, Young Norma Jeane is also given a credit, we can assume that at least some of her early years will be included in the film.
The movie has been in production (or post-production) for a while, and there are numerous rumors circulating about its plot, how it will portray Marilyn Monroe, and what it will be like to see. The audience is thrilled about the upcoming biopic and has received a lot of attention. Blonde will be making its debut on Netflix on September 23, 2022.
Ana de Armas shares her experience about her role
Ana de Armas who plays Marilyn Monroe in the upcoming movie claimed that even though she researched the Hollywood legend and worked with a dialect coach before filming, “my job wasn’t to imitate her.” The 34-year-old Cuban actress stated in a recent interview, “I was interested in her feelings, her journey, her insecurities, and her voice, in the sense that she didn’t really have one.” while she explained her journey to portray the screen siren.
“We worked on this film for hours, every single day for almost a year. I read Joyce’s novel, studied hundreds of photographs, videos, audio recordings, films — anything I could get my hands on. Every scene is inspired by an existing photograph. We’d pore over every detail in the photo and debate what was happening in it. The first question was always, ‘What was Norma Jeane feeling here?’ We wanted to tell the human side of her story.” She continued
According to Netflix Queue, Ana De Armas also spent two to three hours getting her hair and makeup done for the movie. The actress did a ton of additional research before the movie was actually shot and poured everything into her performance.

The actress claims everything in the movie is inspired
Ana de Armas stated to L’Officiel in the same interview that she couldn’t comprehend why the movie received the much-discussed NC-17 rating from the Motion Picture Association, which the publication claimed is a first for a Netflix original film. “I didn’t understand why that happened. I can tell you a number of shows or movies that are way more explicit with a lot more sexual content than Blonde,” she said.
“But to tell this story it is important to show all these moments in Marilyn’s life that made her end up the way that she did. It needed to be explained. Everyone [in the cast] knew we had to go to uncomfortable places. I wasn’t the only one.“
The actress continued as she clarified that everything in the movie is ‘inspired’ by real-life events, even the sexual contents shutting down people who believe that the film might be exploitative.
