“Everything in my career I do not just for that story”: Sydney Sweeney’s Journey Through Hell for Madame Web Was a Strategic Move That Actress Doesn’t Regret
Sydney Sweeney became an overnight sensation with Sam Lewinson’s teenage drama Euphoria. The American actor was praised for her performance in Euphoria and comes under the list of one of the most promising actors in the entertainment industry. She bagged her first Marvel project Madame Web alongside Dakota Johnson.
With a lukewarm reception, Madame Web failed to create a mark at the box office. Despite being a commercial and critical failure, Sydney Sweeney never regrets doing Madame Web for a significant reason.
Sydney Sweeney Believes Madame Web Helped Her Build A Good Bond With Sony
During the promotion of Immaculate, Sydney Sweeney appeared for an interview with GQ. While talking about her first Marvel project, the 26-year-old actor revealed she did not regret doing Madame Web. Sweeney further explained that Madame Web helped her build a good relationship with Sony, one of the most influential names in Hollywood. The actor said-
“To me, that film was a building block, it’s what allowed me to build a relationship with Sony. Without doing Madame Web I wouldn’t have a relationship with the decision-makers over there. Everything in my career I do not just for that story, but strategic business decisions. Because I did that, I was able to sell Anyone But You. I was able to get Barbarella.”
Madame Web was the first Marvel project of 2024. The Dakota Johnson-led superhero movie witnessed its theatrical release on February 14, 2024. With a production budget of $80 million, Madame Web went on to collect only 97. 5 million. Sydney Sweeney will be seen in an upcoming horror drama Immaculate which is slated to release on March 22, 2024.
Sydney Sweeney On The Development Of Immaculate
During an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Immaculate director Michael Mohan and Sydney Sweeney spoke about the psychological horror drama. The Euphoria actor had auditioned for Immaculate 10 years back while talking about what stayed back with respect to the script of her upcoming horror drama, Sweeney said-
“Originally the script was vastly different. Once I got my hands on it and we hired Michael, we drastically revised it so that it could fit who I am today and the world today. But the throughline of the story always has stayed the same. And I think one of the reasons I loved it so much was that some of the scariest and most raw, guttural moments in this movie are in real life.’
While talking about her rapport with director Michael Mohan, Sydney Sweeney mentioned that they have grown up together in the entertainment industry. She said-
I feel like we have grown up in this industry together. Michael was one of the first filmmakers to actually believe in me to be able to have a regular role on a TV show. And I was 19 years old. After working on “Everything Sucks” and “Voyeurs,” you can just communicate with someone differently. Mike and I can just look at each other and we know what we’re thinking. We know what needs to be fixed.
Sweeney believes that having Michael Mohan by her is no less than a blessing. She further said-
We know what’s working without even having to say a word. And having a filmmaker like that on your team is so beneficial to having a project just flow. And it was also my baby and I knew that he wasn’t going to come on and then push me aside.
Immaculate revolves around the story of Cecilia, a nun who finds herself calling to God after experiencing a near-death experience. She moves to a convent and finds herself pregnant through an apparent immaculate conception. The growing interest of priests and doctors in Cecilia’s child becomes unsettling for her.
