It seems that the wait for the character’s resurgence might not be as long as anticipated. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Ali Selim delved into the fate of Cobie Smulders‘ character, Maria Hill, in the aftermath of her shocking demise at the hands of Gravik. This climactic event, where Gravik cleverly posed as Nick Fury, occurred in the closing scenes of the first episode of Secret Invasion. 

When questioned about his interactions with The Marvels team and other creative minds at Marvel Studios to ensure a seamless connection between various projects, Selim candidly admitted that he’s in the dark about the future of characters like Maria Hill and Talos. He further disclosed that, according to his current understanding, both characters are in fact “dead.”

“I don’t know what’s going to happen to Maria Hill or Talos. They’re dead. One is burned, and the other is buried. But in the MCU, anything can happen. So, where are they going to end up? I don’t know.”

These words have ignited a glimmer of hope among fans, suggesting that Maria Hill’s potential return in Secret Invasion is entirely plausible within the ever-surprising realm of the MCU.

Maria Hill used to be an important part of S.H.I.E.L.D., a group that handles important missions. Nick Fury, the boss, chose her to be his right-hand person. In 2012, she was in charge of the Avengers group and helped bring back Phil Coulson. Then, two years later, she pretended that Nick Fury got hurt to catch the bad guys from HYDRA. She teamed up with Captain America, Black Widow, and Falcon to stop HYDRA’s secret plans.

After S.H.I.E.L.D.’s fall, Maria Hill joined Stark Industries and aided Phil Coulson’s missions. She informed the Avengers about Loki’s Scepter and fought Ultron. Following the Snap, she returned, worked with Fury, and attended Stark’s funeral. Resurrected, she reconnected with Fury’s Skrull friend, Talos, learning of a secret Skrull invasion. Collaborating with Fury and Talos, they tried to stop Gravik’s plan but failed. In the chaos, Hill was fatally shot by Gravik disguised as Fury.
