Fans Wished MCU Had Recast T’Challa In Black Panther 2 After The Death Of Chadwick Boseman
Chadwick Boseman has been the face of the Black Panther franchise ever since its inception in 2018. The actor was one of the most promising actors in Hollywood. He died due to colon cancer in 2020. He had kept his medical condition private until his death. During an interview with Inverse back in 2022, Ryan Coogler revealed that after the end of Thanos in the Avengers series, Wakanda Forever was supposed to be about Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa.
While talking about Black Panther’s character in Wakanda Forever, Coogler said-
The tone was going to be similar. The character was going to be grieving the loss of time, you know, coming back after being gone for five years. As a man with so much responsibility to so many, coming back after a forced five-year absence, that’s what the film was tackling. He was grieving a time he couldn’t get back. Grief was a big part of it.” Of course, that story concept had to change after Boseman’s death. “Who the protagonist was, the flaws of the protagonist, what the protagonist was dealing with in their journey, all of that stuff had to be different due to us losing him and the decisions that we made about moving forward,”
Ryan Coogler says #WakandaForever was originally going to focus on T'Challa struggling to resume life after Thanos' snap

After coming across the original plot of Wakanda Forever, fans took to social media and reacted to Ryan Coogler’s statement. According to the Black Panther fans, the Marvel Cinematic Universe should have gone ahead with recasting T’Challa following the death of Chadwick Boseman. A fan even went on to compare Shuri with Boseman’s T’Challa on X-
As much as I LOVED Shuri in Wakanda forever, it would’ve been better to have the T’Challa story tbh.

After Chadwick Boseman’s death, Marvel did not take a chance of recasting any other actor for Black Panther. Instead, the studios went ahead with Shuri, making her the official Black Panther- which even honored Boseman’s legacy. T’Challa’s death is mourned throughout Black Panther 2.
Chadwick Boseman Talks About The Cultural Impact Of Black Panther
During an interview with Esquire in 2019, Chadwick Boseman spoke about the cultural impact made by Marvel’s Black Panther. From talking about representation to diversity, the actor poured his heart out with respect to an all-black cast in a Marvel project. He said-
I’ve noticed a change. I’ve seen a willingness of production companies and studios to castings in a way that they wouldn’t normally do. You can’t make certain statements about a black lead, or a black cast, or having a certain number of people of color – it’s not just black actors – anymore. In fact, it’s been proven that audiences want to see the difference. They want to see variety and a world that reflects them whether it be race, gender, or sexuality. They want to see those things, so I think people are looking for opportunities in storytelling now.
While talking about the distribution of Black Panther, he further continued to say-
Separate to that, but adding to it, is the business of distribution. It’s increased the opportunities as there are more things being shot and being seen in more places thanks to streaming. I think it’s the combination of variety, opportunities, and distribution that makes it different. At the same time, I can’t say that everything has changed. The business is finding itself, and finding its value, so it’s still in the balance. I’ll also say that I’m in a unique position where I get to see the front and back of those things. There are a lot of people who haven’t broken through yet, and who are still trying to find their way and trying to get through certain prejudices.”
Made on a production budget of $200 million, Black Panther amassed a staggering box office collection of $1.3 billion. With an IMDb rating of 7.3 out of 10, Black Panther can be streamed on Disney+
