Simu Liu, an actor who became well-known for playing Shang-Chi in a Marvel Studios film, was defended by devoted Marvel fans after they read that the actor was a “thirst trap” and a “token” Asian. The actor, who is of Asian and Hispanic descent, has appeared in films like Women Is Losers, One True Loves, and Simulant.

Liu went on to criticize the online article by claiming that he is an actor and not just a “thirst trap” in the Asian industry. Fans quickly became aware of the criticism the actor was receiving and defended him, saying it was disappointing that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings did not receive the praise it deserved.

Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi is criminally overlooked

A social media account shared a fight sequence from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings under a tweet that asked ‘What’s a fight that you rate 10/10?’ The comments below the tweet showcase the immense support Simu Liu along with the cast and crew of the movie received from the audience.

A user said, “I love this fight more than words can say. Been practicing tai chi for a long time, and everyone only knows it by its use as a form of exercise & conditioning, and not by its combat application. The “Oh, you have an artifact? That’s cute…” is just icing on the cake.” Another user went ahead to say that the fights in the movie were one of the best Marvel movies ever made.

A Twitter user pointed out, “Shang Chi is so criminally overlooked by the people that want to be convinced that phase IV was a disappointment.” Another fan tweeted, “That fight scene was so well choreographed”, while a user declared, “This entire movie felt so refreshing for the MCU. I think it’s my favorite origin story movie since Iron Man.” Another user noted, “Fighting choreography was the best we’ve seen, visual effects were the best we’ve seen, characters were good and script was interesting. I don’t get the hate.”

Simu Liu accused of publicly shaming and targeting people online

The actor is no stranger to controversy, having run afoul of it both in 2022 when he expressed his views on mental health treatment on Twitter and in 2021 when fans discovered old, contentious Reddit posts, including those on an incel subreddit.

It all began when someone posted a TikTok video criticizing Simu Liu for being the ‘face of the Asian diaspora’ online’, tagged the actor in the post, and wrote that the actor was the biggest ick alive. Liu uploaded the video to his account and added the following:

I was for some reason mentioned in this story so I figured I might as well share it.

A) not the face of the Asian diaspora. We are literally in a golden era of Asian representation and that’s what’s so exciting is that there’s room for so many of us

B) definitely not homophobic or incel (but what the ACTUAL f**k is that accusation)

C) I can completely respect that you don’t rock w me but maybe see someone for the amount of hatred you feel over someone you literally do not know in the slightest! hope you get the help you need.

Simu Liu excited about Marvel sequel ‘Shang-Chi 2’

According to reports, actor Simu Liu is excited to return to one of the most beloved characters of Shang-Chi when Marvel Studios decides to give the sequel a go. During a conversation with a publication, Liu said,

“Generally, you’re under the most pressure when something is unproven. There’s really high stakes. I remember shooting the first movie and feeling like, ‘Okay, we’re essentially crafting this character, every single day.’ The stakes could not be higher because it was a 100 bajillion dollar movie budget. I feel like those are the circumstances under which the pressure would be the highest.”

Talking about the sequel, Simu Liu said,

“Going into a sequel feels exciting. It doesn’t necessarily feel like there’s pressure to perform or a pressure to exceed. It feels like we’ve established a world and there’s just something really nostalgic and exciting about returning to that world that we’ve spent so much time ideating on and thinking about. And then, we’re getting to revisit some things, but also show the viewer new things.”

The actor claimed that in addition to providing the acclaimed action scenes from the first film, they would also hopefully explore fresh facets of Shaun’s character and the personalities of those around him. That is, of course, Liu noted that if they can still get Michelle Yeoh on-board, as she is the absolute queen of everything and on top of the world.
