Marvel Studios’ Eternals, directed by Chloé Zhao, starred Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kit Harington, and more. The 2018 movie produced by Kevin Feige and Nate Moore follows the immortal beings that emerge after thousands of years from hiding to protect Earth from their ancient counterparts, the Deviants.
Upon its release, the movie became one of the few MCU creations that did not manage to garner positive responses from the audience or the critics. The screenplay written by Chloé Zhao, Patrick Burleigh, Ryan Firpo, and Kaz Firpo was criticized, but at the same time, the themes and visuals of the movie were appreciated. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently shared a disappointing update on the sequel to the movie.
Marvel president Kevin Feige reveals ‘no plans’ for Marvel Studios’ Eternals 2
Eternals starred Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kit Harington, and more, and managed to gross over $402 million worldwide. However, unfortunately, the highly anticipated movie at the time did not receive favorable comments from the audience or the critics. Eternals was considered to be the movie that delivered Marvel Studios’ years-long promise of creating movies with more diverse casts.
Despite receiving mixed reviews, fans have been waiting for a sequel to finally have answers to the questions they’ve had for years. However, Kevin Feige does not think the same way. In a conversation with Inverse Magazine, he shared,
There are no immediate plans for Eternals 2. There are, and I think you’ve seen maybe in the trailer we’ve released recently, an acknowledgment of some of those events. Certain giant things came out of the ocean.
The trailer Feige mentions is of Captain America: Brave New World, in which shots of a battle over Tiamut Island, a landmass that formed when Eternals defeated a giant celestial emerging, were shown. Fans pointed out that Eternals’ mid-credit scene, introducing Harry Styles as Eros or hinting that Kit Harrington’s Dane Whitman is now Black Knight is left unanswered.
The ardent fans of the franchise are not very pleased with Feige canceling the sequel. After a successful D23 Expo where Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU was announced as Doctor Doom, the future of some Marvel movies remains unclear. However, an X user (@comicodigy) shared a way to wrap up the cliffhangers;
Feige, just make a cosmic crossover between The Eternals, New Guardians, and Thor to wrap up the Eternals cliffhanger before Avengers: Doomsday.
The characters of James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy and the Eternals already came across each other when the Guardians were attempting to fight Eson, also known as The Searcher in GOTG: Cosmic Rewind. A lot of fans seemed enthusiastic about the idea of a cosmic crossover.
ScreenRant reported that the new Guardians could come across Eternals, and would help them track down the missing Eternals and reveal more about Styles’ character. However, nothing can be said as of now, except that the sequel to Eternals is not happening for the time being.
Kit Harington on taking up a Marvel role in the Eternals
Popularly known as Jon Snow from Game of Thrones, actor Kit Harington played the character Dane Whitman in Eternals. Even though he was regarded as a supporting character in the movie, he was positioned as a significant addition to the franchise. In a recent cover story for GQ, Harington touched upon whether he’d return to the MCU or not, to which he said,
I’m not going to pretend I took that role because it was different and interesting. If Marvel calls, you have to do it.
He later clarified that he liked his character and would love to return if they change their mind about not working on the sequel of the movie. However, Dane Whitman is rumored to be connected to Mahershala Ali’s rumored upcoming movie, Blade.
Kevin Feige, in his conversation with BlackTree TV (via Variety), when asked about an update on Blade, shared that for the last two years, they have been trying to crack the movie. He said it’s the most important thing for them at this moment, and they’re not rushing into anything.
