“F**k you!”: Brad Pitt’s Ex Angelina Jolie Clashed With ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ Director Over Marriage Advice
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have been the most notorious couple in Hollywood. Going through a rollercoaster relationship since 2005, the couple ended up getting divorced in 2016. However, with a throwback to their first meeting on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith in 2003, Jolie ended up fighting with the director. Portraying the role of husband and wife, the actress engaged in heated arguments on the set which led to quick altercations while filming.
Clashing with the director of Mr. and Mrs. Smith over marriage lessons Angelina Jolie was butting heads with Doug Liman. In hindsight, although Jolie didn’t consider the arguments to be quite serious, Liman took them to heart and thus ended up temporarily avoiding the actress.
Angelina Jolie’s Heated Arguments With Doug Liman
Angelina Jolie after suffering two failed marriages, appeared for the role of Brad Pitt’s wife in Mr. and Mrs. Smith (2003). Although director Doug Liman considered Pitt’s ex-girlfriend Gwyneth Paltrow for the role, Jolie was always the first choice. Surpassing Nicole Kidman and Cate Blanchett, the Maleficent actress bagged the role of Mrs. Smith.
However, appearing on set with experiences from her previous marriages, Angelina Jolie was judged all too quickly by the director. Doug Liman felt Jolie couldn’t help but bring her absorbed valuable lessons into the movie. Nevertheless, feeling insulted by this opinion, the actress engaged in heated arguments with the director.
“Oh, we had troubles! The movie is all about marriage, and Doug would be saying, ‘Well, in my relationship this would happen’” Jolie recalled arguments from the set. Having totally different opinions, Jolie mentioned, “And we’d all say, ‘F**k you!’ and I’d say, ‘Well, in my marriage I would never do that,’”. Engaging in such arguments, at times ended up with Liman not speaking with Jolie, which led Brad Pitt to temporarily direct a few scenes.
Angelina Jolie Wanted Mr. and Mrs. Smith Sequel
Despite having constant arguments with Doug Liman, Angelina Jolie had a positive outlook. Without feeling bad about the squabble, Jolie mentioned, “Everyone has an opinion, but that’s healthy,”. Further, the actress confided about being interested in shooting a sequel for Mr. and Mrs. Smith with her co-star Brad Pitt. Enjoying her time on set, the Lara Croft: Tomb Raider actress hoped for the possibility of a sequel.
“We did ask somebody to look into Mr. & Mrs. to see if they could crack a sequel, but there wasn’t anything original.” Jolie expressed. Appearing for an interview with MTV News in 2010, Jolie mentioned, “It was just, ‘Well, they’re going to get married, or they’ve got kids, or they get separated.’ Never great,”. Failing to find the right story, kept Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt from bringing the second installment of their 2003 prequel.
However, Jolie didn’t rule out the possibility and thus stated, “We’ve talked about it.” Nonetheless, their wish was never fulfilled although they later teamed up for their 2015 movie, By The Sea.
