Coppola is making a comeback to Hollywood with the movie Megalopolis, a project he has been working on for years. There is a lot of hype around the movie since everyone is looking forward to seeing what the veteran filmmaker has in store. That being said, this is a risky situation for Coppola as the movie’s success or failure will affect more than just his reputation.

Francis Ford Coppola took a break from filmmaking for a while because he did not intend to make movies for the sake of it. He wanted to make a movie where he could experiment and see what he could come up with, which would not be possible with the entertainment industry more interested in making movies that could earn them millions.

Luckily, the director figured out a way to do exactly what he wanted to, and that is how Megalopolis came to be. However, this appears to be a make-or-break situation as the movie’s box office collection will impact his $400 net worth (via Celebrity Net Worth), and it is hard to tell if it will be positive or negative.

Besides making movies, The Outsiders director excels as an entrepreneur and wine investor. When studios refused to invest in his vision for this movie which happens to be his passion project, he sold his namesake wineries in Sonoma County to Delicato Family Wines (via Wine Spectator) to collect the funds required for making his dream come true.

In an interview with GQ, he claimed to be investing $120 million in the movie. This sum is minus the marketing costs so it has to earn at least twice or thrice the invested amount just to break even. To be profitable, it has to make much more than that.

This is not the first time the studios shut down Coppola’s vision for a movie. The first was when he made Apocalypse Now. Now, years later, one would think that he would no longer have the guts to sell his property to make a movie, but he proved them wrong.

Money is the last thing on The Rainmaker director’s mind as he is not too worried about the repercussions of self-funding such a massive endeavor (via GQ).

“I couldn’t care less about the financial impact whatsoever. It means nothing to me. […] It’s not as if $120 million is the extent of what I have.”

Even his family does not mind him putting such a huge amount of money into a project that may or not succeed. If Megalopolis becomes a commercial success, it will be a win-win. According to Deadline, the movie is gearing up for a Fall IMAX release.
