Created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, Game of Thrones is an American fantasy drama series, which is an adaptation of author George R.R. Martin’s fantasy novel series; A Song of Ice and Fire. The show premiered in 2011 and was concluded in 2019 with 73 episodes spanning over eight seasons.

HBO’s Game of Thrones is one of the most popular and successful shows that managed to attract record viewership. With every passing season, the series only received positive reviews from the audience and the critics. However, the last season received criticism for various reasons including the conclusion of the series. The creators, the D.B. Brothers, recently claimed that if given a chance, there are certain things they would want to change about the series. Let’s find out.

Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B.Weiss address the season 8 backlash

Creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss who are currently promoting their upcoming Netflix sci-fi drama 3 Body Problem, spoke to THR for a cover story shoot. During the conversation, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss finally addressed the backlash they received after the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones, which premiered in 2019. Benioff said,

“You always hope everyone’s going to love anything you do and it would’ve been great if 100 percent of people loved it, but they didn’t. You can get so bogged down in public that you spend your whole life Googling things and trying to find people who felt one way or the other way.”

“Even super positive feedback makes you feel weird and teeth-grindy and on edge. There’s a drug quality to the feedback, and as soon as we went cold turkey—the last time I Googled myself was in 2013—the ambient stress level in our lives dropped by about 50% overnight.”

The creators of one of the biggest shows expressed that they didn’t feel the need to agree/defend or react to the criticism that came their way. It was because they believed that it wouldn’t have benefited them, HBO, or the cast and crew who worked on making the show what it eventually became.

It was noted that D.B. Weiss returned to his masterpiece and re-watched it whereas David Benioff has stayed away since 2019. The show featured Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, and a range of other talented actors.

Game of Thrones creators wish they brought back Mord the Jailer on the show

During the conversation with THR, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss revealed one thing they would like to go back and change about the Game of Thrones, if given a chance. Benioff and Weiss said,

“One thing I know I wish we could have done is there’s the character Mord the Jailer. It was a mistake not bringing Mord the Jailer back into it. We always talked about doing that. And we had the scenes for it. There’s a scene set in a tavern.”

Weiss continued,

“Was it Brienne or The Hound? But we realized too late that Mord could have owned the tavern. We could have had that actor in the background acting exactly the way he did as a jailer, except now as a small business owner. It was just such an obvious no-brainer, day-after idea.”

The showrunners also added that they had always planned on making seven seasons of the show. They claimed that the criticism related to ‘chasing money,’ was merely an assumption from fans. The two even turned down the guaranteed producer credits on all Game of Thrones spin-offs as the creators of the show.

They concluded that they decided to not take any credit for House of Dragon because of the strain that would have come their way. Being involved with the show, and its future success or failure simply did not seem worth the trouble.

Game of Thrones and House of Dragon are streaming on HBO.
