George R.R. Martin is promising to reveal the dragon-rider connection in his upcoming books. But fans have been waiting for these books for what feels like forever.

Martin recently dropped some hints about what is coming in his future books. In a blog post, he talked about how he took inspiration from real animals for the dragons. They can be trained, for sure, but not completely tamed, like having a pet tiger in today’s world.

Martin also mentioned that he will explain the special connection between dragons and the Targaryen family in his upcoming books, The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring, and also a sequel to Fire and Blood called Blood and Fire. In his blog post, he mentioned,

They bond with men… Some men… And the why and how of that, and how it came to be, will eventually be revealed in more detail in The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring and some in Blood and Fire.

However, it seems like fans have been running out of patience waiting for his next book, as his last book, A Dance with Dragons, came out almost 13 years ago, in 2011.

In an earlier interview at Worldcon (via r/asoiaf Reddit), Martin dug deeper into this dragon-human relationship. He explained that it is impossible to be the boss of a dragon. It is not like riding a horse, where the rider can use a whip. With a dragon, the rider might end up dead if he or she does that. Martin focused on some kind of “psychic bond” that goes on between the dragon and its rider.

But why do the Targaryens have this special dragon connection? Martin didn’t say much about that in the interview. However, he did drop a hint about the Targaryens being the last survivors of Valyria, which is a place with lots of dragon-riding families that got wiped out 400 years before Game of Thrones started.

Why Is The Winds of Winter Getting Delayed?

Fans have been waiting for The Winds of Winter for over a decade now. Martin keeps saying he is working on it, but progress seems painfully slow. According to Radio Times, Martin claimed in 2022 that he had finished about three-quarters of the story.

However, in 2010, he claimed that he had already written the four chapters of The Winds of Winter. Then, in a Spanish blog, Adria’s News, he claimed that the book would come out in 2014. These claims and denials kept happening for a long time.

In November 2023, while speaking to Bangcast, he said he’d written about 1,100 pages. But that was the same number he mentioned a year earlier. It is like the book is stuck in time.

The author has been pretty open about his struggle. According to SYFY, he said, “I get that Winds of Winter, the sixth book, is late.” He has even stopped making predictions about when it will be done because fans get upset when he misses deadlines.

Talking about one of the potential reasons behind the delays, Martin admitted that he gets distracted by other projects. He has been working on video games, TV shows, and spin-offs like Dark Winds and House of the Dragon. In his interview with Bangcast, he said,

But I also have like eight other spin-off shows that we’re developing. The Dunk and Egg show has been greenlit. The others, not yet, but we’re still working on them.

At an event with author Cassandra Clare in 2023, he admitted his situation of delay and said that he is 12 years late with The Winds of Winter and urged his fans not to pester him about it.

As of now, nobody knows when The Winds of Winter will come out, not even Martin himself. Fans are left hanging, hoping that one day they will wake up to the news that the book is finally done.
