“Give this man an Emmy already!”: The Boys’ Showrunner Teases Homelander’s Best Arc Yet as Antony Starr’s Villain Goes Berserk
Developed by Erick Kripke, The Boys is a satirical superhero series based on the comic book of the same name and follows the eponymous team of vigilantes as they fight super-powered individuals who abuse the power they have. The series features actors including Antony Starr, Karl Urban, Chace Crawford, and more. The series was initially intended to be a feature-length movie, but in 2016, after Kripke got on board, it was developed into a television series.
The series has received positive responses from critics and the audience for its storyline, humor, performances, and effects. Two actors who have been known to stand out in the series are, of course, Karl Urban and Antony Starr, and now the showrunner has mentioned one star who he thinks should be given an Emmy Award!
Erick Kripke says Antony Starr’s performance as Homelander is Emmy Award-worthy
The Boys is back with season four, which means Antony Starr is back as Homelander with his team, including Deep, A-Train, Black Noir, and new additions Sister Sage and Firecracker. The showrunner, Eric Kripke, shared the trailer for the upcoming episode of season four of the show and said that the audience is in for quite the ride. He tweeted,
Wait until you see the Antony Starr performance. I’ve edited tons of Homelander films, and this is among the very best and definitely one of the scariest. Give this man an Emmy already!
The clip and trailer shared showcase Homelander returning home as suggested by his subconscious towards the end of episode 3 after he yells at his son Ryan for meeting Billy Butcher. The upcoming episode is going to explore the backstory of Homelander and the clip further shows a flashback of a crying child. Firecracker, played by Valorie Curry, was also shown going live on TV and threatening to reveal the truth about Starlight.
There is no doubt that Antony Starr is one of the exceptionally talented actors who, with his portrayal of Homelander, has proved why he is considered one of the finest. But back in 2020, the actor, who had already gained attention for playing the character, revealed that after avoiding reading the script for a week, he saw that it was a superhero character and assumed he’d not get it. He further added via Metro,
Then they were hassling, so I sat in my dressing room, picked a spot on my iPad, and filmed this audition almost out of spite for my reps. Then it got to Eric, and my reps said, ‘They loved it’. Which was surprising.
Starr mentioned that after he read the script, he realized that it was actually really good and worth putting some time and energy into. He noted that before he knew it, he was donning spandex. Homelander is one of the iconic characters on television, and Starr’s acting has everything to do with it, so when Kripke says that his work’s Emmy Award-winning is worthy, it indeed is.
The Boys’ showrunner gave up on understanding Homelander’s fans
Homelander is not a positive character who should be loved by the audience despite being the lead, and in an interview with Slash Films, Erick Kripke says that he has now given up on understanding the character’s fan base. Upon asking how he feels about Homelander being praised as the icon of ‘Hey, things are f***ed up right now, he said,
I really lucked into adapting it at the single best time in history to adapt that comic. I think he really connects with people on that level. I think none of that would happen if Antony Starr wasn’t delivering a masterful performance in every single episode. He makes you understand the guy.
Calling Starr an astounding actor, the showrunner noted that the actor is doing some Emmy-worthy work, and it’s mind-blowing that he hasn’t won anything yet. Kripke mentioned that he makes the character of Homelander so undeniable and portrays the character as a performance for the ages. He concluded that maybe it is one of the reasons why people deviate from him.
The showrunner also revealed that the authors of the books, Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, are in regular communication with him and read every single draft. Erick Kripke shared that for people who keep complaining about how the book is better than the show, should rather just read the comic because he’s just interpreting the source material.
Season 4, with three episodes out, The Boys is streaming on Prime Video.
