SUMMARY
  • Glen Powell and Zoey Deutch's stalled Netflix rom-com remains highly anticipated after a mixed reception of 'Anyone But You'.
  • Powell and Deutch's chemistry in 'Set It Up' and their interest in working together again make a strong case for reviving 'Most Dangerous Game'.
  • Powell's recent rom-com 'Anyone But You' was a box office success but faced heavy criticism.

Glen Powell has been riding the waves of fame and popularity lately, thanks to his roles in action films like Top Gun: Maverick and romantic comedies such as Anyone But You. Nevertheless, fans have found his best performance in a rom-com in his Netflix movie Set It Up released in 2018, where he co-starred with Zoey Deutch.

Currently, both actors have been in good standing in their careers separately. However, the talks about their potential team-up once again have been going on for a long time, and it appears both Powell and Deutch are open to a second collaboration.

Netflix was initially expected to team Glen Powell, Zoey Deutch, and the writer of Set It Up, Katie Silberman, for Most Dangerous Game. It was expected to start production by early 2020. Both actors were going to be the executive producers of the film, along with Treehouse Pictures’ Juliet Berman and Justin Nappi.

When talking about the project, Justin Nappi talked about the magic of Powell and Deutch’s combination. He said earlier (via Netflix),

The pairing of Zoey and Glen’s undeniable spark with Katie’s razor sharp dialogue was such an important factor in the success of Set It Up and we cannot wait to build on that even more with Most Dangerous Game.

Sadly, the film has not been made yet, but both actors admitted to wanting to share the screen again. During an earlier interview with Entertainment Tonight, Powell said,

One project we were trying to figure out didn’t really kind of come to fruition, but Zoey and I are very committed to getting back on screen together.

The actors seem to love the script even after these many years. During her recent interview for the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Deutch said that she is still very much interested in the project. She said,

It’s my favorite script that I have on this computer. I cannot stress how good it is. I was just talking to Katie yesterday about it. It’s just one of those things. It will be made. It is so good.

Deutch also said the movie “is a romcom, but different” and that it holds “an amazing part for Glenn.” Judging by her comments, their chemistry in Set It Up, and the performance of Glenn’s recent rom-coms, it seems high time for the actors to team up once again to get rom-coms back on track.

Glen Powell Needs This Movie More Than Ever After Anyone But You

Overall, Anyone But You has been a box office success, earning over $220 million worldwide (as per Box Office Mojo). But the Shakespeare-inspired romantic comedy has not been loved by critics that much.

The movie is about Powell and Sydney Sweeney‘s characters, who had a great first date but turned a cold shoulder to each other after that before getting back together at the end of the movie. The film currently holds a 54% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a B+ rating on CinemaScore

Though Powell seemed a comfortable fit for the role, many felt that his character was the same as any romantic lead ever. The film’s script was also criticized for its lazy writing and underdeveloped story.

Sarah El-Mahmoud from CinemaBlend said the movie was “neither raunchy enough nor romantic enough.” David Sims from The Atlantic stated, “Both leads are attractive, but their personal chemistry is nonexistent.”

Anyone But You shows that star power alone can’t produce a great romantic comedy. It takes the right script and the right chemistry as well, all of which make for an even stronger argument for bringing back Most Dangerous Game with Powell and Deutch.

Anyone But You is available to stream on Netflix.
