With an audience score of 91% and critics 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie received a grade of A- at the CinemaScore. It has the same score as the first movie, but what is different is the difference between the box office collections.

Glen Powell’s Twisters is far behind Bill Paxton’s Twister

According to reports by ScreenDaily, Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones, starrer Twisters created a lot of buzz during the promotions and received positive responses from the critics and audience. But unfortunately, she couldn’t perform at the box office the way it was expected. It has however managed to gross over $310.1 million at the box office worldwide but has a long way to go to surpass the original movie.

1996’s Twister, starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt, which is to date regarded as one of the best disaster movies of all time, was the second highest-grossing movie of 1996. The blockbuster movie managed to gross near about $495.7 million worldwide by the end of its theatrical run.

It is very optimistic to see if the new Twisters will be able to surpass the original movie, but the movie is already in its fourth weekend, and now its’ competition is Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine. The Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman starrer has already grossed over $1 billion at the box office.

Powell, upon his appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, shared the impact the original movie had on him. He said,

I think I saw the original Twister probably when I was 10 years old. I grew up in Austin, Texas, so the tornado alley was part of it. And I feel ‘Twister was always sort of a movie that felt like it was for Texans or people in Oklahoma or Kansas, but then you travel the world and you realize it was a massive movie. Humans versus nature is a very universal thing.

Glen Powell during the interview also mentioned that he had the opportunity to work with Bill Paxton in Red Wing, and they became close on that movie. Powell also noted that when Paxton heard that Powell was going to play John Glenn in Hidden Figures, the late actor shared his research on space as well as his advice on action, which Powell carries with him to date.

Is Glen Powell’s Twisters’ box office record a red flag for The Running Man?

Anyone But You actor will be seen in Edgar Wright’s remake of Running Man, which was announced at CinemaCon 2024. The writer-director had announced that he was looking forward to adapting Stephen King’s novel The Running Man for the big screen and will be working with screenwriter Michael Bacall to adapt the novel.

The Running Man was previously adapted in 1987, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, and opened to mixed reviews from critics and audiences. In his interview with IndieWire, the actor was asked about his involvement in the movie, to which he explained,

We’ve been going back and forth on script stuff, and it’s so fun. The world Edgar’s developed on this thing is just outrageous. It’s so good. And really, we’re just both such big fans of the Stephen King book, and it’s going to be a great character.

Where the actor seems optimistic about his upcoming remake of The Running Man, his recent release’s collection does not say that he’d have the success that he expects. The audience nowadays is not very keen on watching a movie that has already made its space in the industry, as they believe that the original ideas and thoughts never pop up if the makers keep working on the already-made projects.

There is always a risk of diluting the legacy of the original movie, which at times does not sit right with the fans. It also fails to capture the essence. It’s hard to say at this moment how The Running Man would perform, but it’s apt to conclude that moviegoers would like the makers to create new and original movies rather than ripping off the ones that are already out there.

Twisters is expected to stream on the digital platform starting August 13, 2024.
