“Go ahead. Put it out there!”: One Creature Commandos Star Wants a Live Action Debut in James Gunn’s DCU Despite No Official Confirmation
- Creature Commandos is the first installment of the rebooted DCU.
- Creature Commandos star David Harbour wants to make his live-action debut.
- Harbour also teased what is in store for Thunderbolts* fans.
The rebooted version of DCU officially kickstarted a few weeks ago and the first outing is the animated TV show Creature Commandos. Fans are very excited to see what the franchise has in store for the characters in the show after this series.
One of the most important questions is whether the actors will continue to voice the characters in the animated version or if they will also play the live-action versions of these characters. James Gunn has already touched down on this question, but as of now, nothing seems to be set in stone. That said, Creature Commandos star David Harbour is more than ready for his character to make his big-screen entry.
David Harbour is willing to make the transition to live-action in the DCU
For those uninitiated, Creature Commandos, written and created by James Gunn, is an adult-animated TV series based on the eponymous team from DC Comics. The show primarily focuses on the undercover team of monsters assembled by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). One of these monsters is Eric Frankenstein, portrayed by David Harbour in the show.
Eric Frankenstein is the love interest-turned-stalker of the character, the Bride (Indira Varma). He is known to have killed off their creator Victor Frankenstein centuries ago and is mostly based on the eponymous character in Mary Shelley’s 1818 Gothic novel Frankenstein. He is constantly trying to win the Bride’s heart despite her numerous rebuttals.
In a recent interview with Collider, when asked if Harbour has had any conversations with Gunn about Frankenstein crossing over to the live-action DCU, he said:
I’m just like, “Go ahead. Put it out there!” Because I do think it’d be super fun. We talked about it casually. There’s nothing planned, but I talked to him a little bit about the realities of what that would look like in terms of CG or practical effects, and he had all kinds of different thoughts and ideas.
It would certainly be interesting to watch the actor portray a live-action DC character that is actually a monster. The good news is that Gunn has considered having the same actor do the voice-acting as the one who appears on the big screen (via DC on YouTube). There has been no official confirmation regarding this yet, hopefully, fans will learn soon.
David Harbour teased the chemistry between the anti-hero team in Thunderbolts*
Harbour notably also plays the character of Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In fact, he is going to appear in MCU’s Thunderbolts* as a part of the ensemble cast. Upon being asked what he is most excited for fans to see in that movie, he said it’s the team’s chemistry.
It was so unexpected and wacky, and I just fell in love with that team. So, I think that what you’ll see is, again, a real chemistry. […] I think that we sort of got under the hoods of each other, as anti-heroes would do, and made each other feel things and think things that were provocative at times, and it just made the chemistry between us so strong.
While Florence Pugh, Hannah John-Kamen, and Sebastian Stan will be reprising their respective roles as Yelena Belova, Ava Starr/Ghost, and the Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes, many new faces have joined the cast such as Julia Louis-Dreyfus Wyatt Russell, Lewis Pullman, and Olga Kurylenko. The movie marks the end of MCU’s Phase Five and is scheduled to be released in May this year.
Creature Commandos is streaming on Max.
