SUMMARY
  • Denis Villeneuve's contributions to cinema with the Dune franchise are astounding.
  • Golden Globes not including Denis Villeneuve in the nominations for Best Director is disappointing.
  • Fans are publicly calling out the Golden Globes for the injustice done to the Sicario director.

The nominations for the 82nd Golden Globes have been announced, and the snubs are too prominent to ignore. The most heinous of these snubs is Denis Villeneuve’s for directing Dune: Part Two. While everyone involved has put a lot of hard work into that masterpiece of a sci-fi film, Villeneuve is certainly someone who deserves a huge part of the credit.

Dune is easily one of the most popular franchises of recent years, and yet somehow, the panel at the Golden Globes has found a way to overlook Villeneuve’s contribution. Fans are obviously mad about this snub and will probably not let go of it anytime soon.

Born and raised in Quebec, Denis Villeneuve began his career as a filmmaker with short films. He made his directorial debut with the film, August 32nd on Earth in 1998. He made three more movies in French before expanding his portfolio with English movies like Prisoners and Enemy.

2016’s Arrival earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Director. In fact, the Academy has been recognizing his work since 2010, when Incendies was nominated for Best International Feature Film. However, the same cannot be said about the Golden Globes, which first acknowledged his work in Arrival.

This time, Villeneuve’s name has been shockingly missing from the Golden Globes nominations for Best Director for a Motion Picture. Although Dune: Part Two was a critical and commercial success, the panel seems to have completely ignored the Blade Runner 2049 director’s work on the cinematic masterpiece.

According to the official Golden Globes site, the directors nominated in that category are Jacques Audiard (Emilia Perez), Sean Baker (Anora), Edward Berger (Conclave), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist) Coralie Fargeat (The Substance), and Payal Kapadia (All We Imagine as Light). This is not to say that any of these directors are undeserving of the nominations, but it also cannot be denied that Villeneuve too was deserving of one.

This is not the first time an award show has disregarded a creative’s hard work. Over the years, there have been many instances where it has been seen that these award shows have ignored some of the best creatives and their work despite the mass critical acclaim and commercial success they have earned.

Luckily, fans have also never failed to call out these award shows for being unfair to such wonderful entities. Last year’s Oscars snub of Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie for Barbie is still fresh. Here is what some people on X have to say about Villeneuve’s Golden Globes snub:

Fans’ outrage over this snub is understandable considering how great the movie is. That said, Dune was nominated for 3 Golden Globe Awards in 2022 and won 1 out of them. Its sequel has been nominated for 2 awards at the show- Best Motion Picture and Best Original Score for a Motion Picture. Now, it remains to be seen whether or not The Academy will announce Villeneuve as a nominee for Best Director.
