Disney’s upcoming musical drama Mufasa: The Lion King is a live-action-styled photorealistic animated prequel to the 2019 remake of 1994’s The Lion King. Directed by Barry Jenkins from a screenplay by Jeff Nathanson, Mufasa: The Lion King will feature the voices of Seth Rogen, Donald Glover, Beyoncé, Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and more.
The movie’s music is by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hans Zimmer, Pharrell Williams, and Nicholas Britell.

The highly anticipated movie is scheduled for release on December 20, 2024. The story follows Rafiki narrating the story of Mufasa and Taka (Scar) to Kiara. The additional commentary from Timon and Pumbaa is said to add color to the movie. But it’s the background score that elevates the trailer.

A trailer for the upcoming musical drama by Disney; Mufasa: The Lion King was recently released, and  it has been revealed that Blue Ivy Carter is going to join the cast to voice the character of Kiara. Actors Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison are going to voice the younger versions of Mufasa and Tak. How I Me Your Mother actor- songwriter-singer, Lin-Manuel Miranda is behind the music of the movie. In a statement via Variety, he shared,

“Elton John, Time Rice, Hans Zimmer, Lebo M. Mark Mancina, Beyoncé, Labrinth, Beau Black, Ilya Salmanzadeh, Fore Riley, the incredible team on The Lion Guard, and so many musical contributors over the years. The Lion King has an incredible musical legacy with music from some of the greatest songwriters around, and I’m humbled and proud to be a part of it.”

He further added that it has been the utmost joy for him to work alongside Barry Jenkins to bring Mufasa’s story to life, adding that the cast and crew cannot wait for the audience to watch the movie in theaters. In his interview with Empire Magazine, Barry Jenkins praised the actor-songwriter and said,

“Lin really leaned in and tried to find the places that myself and Jeff Nathanson, the writer of the script, had tried to go deeper into the backgrounds of some characters in this film. He did a really, really wonderful job, and he and I already had something of a rapport.”

The recently released trailer has showcased Jenkins’ intimate close-up, the goosebump-inducing voice of Rafiki, and the iconic stone where the King of the Jungle oversees her entire domain.

One of the most successful and sacred properties of Disney’s The Lion King, according to reports by Variety, managed to gross over $960 million worldwide, while the 2019 version grossed $1.6 billion. With the trailer just being released, the anticipation amongst the audience for the movie has already increased. Director Barry Jenkins had mentioned earlier,

“Helping my sister raise two young boys during the ‘90s, I grew up with these characters. Having the opportunity to work with Disney on expanding this magnificent tale of friendship, love, and legacy while furthering my work chronicling the lives and souls of folk within the African diaspora is a dream come true.”

The director also mentioned that the audience can expect many things in the movie: an epic story and comedy with familiar faces. He noted that there are some hilarious moments and some with extreme gravitas.

Tony Chambers, Disney Global Distribution President, had also shared (via THR) that the film features the same immersive, photo-realistic environment that wowed the audience for the first time.
