‘Had an Experience in the States With My Own Children’: Angelina Jolie Hints She Became an Award Winning UN Special Envoy for Human Rights After Brad Pitt Abused Her
Angelina Jolie is known for her roles in films such as Maleficent, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Girl, Interrupted, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and Wanted. Recently, the actress has come under the spotlight for her former relationship with Brad Pitt after it was revealed that the actress had accused her former husband of physical and verbal abuse. Now, it seems like the reports of Brad Pitt’s abusive behavior are true since the actress confirmed it.
Angelina Jolie’s experience with child abuse in her family inspired her to write her book
Last year, the actress did an interview with The Guardian, in which she talked about her experiences of being the UN Special Envoy for Human Rights for two decades. During the interview, the actress was asked about the motivation behind her book, Know Your Rights and Claim Them: A Guide for Youth, which she co-wrote with Geraldine Van Bueren, a child rights lawyer. The book is a guide that lists all the rights of children under the UN convention and provides instructions on how to claim those rights. Moreover, it also includes advice from people who have struggled with this in life.
Talking about her inspiration for writing the book, the actress stated,
“I’ve met too many children who live with the effect of their rights being violated – displaced people, young rape victims. I couldn’t understand why they were still fighting for basic things that were their rights to begin with. It made me very angry. How are we going to solve anything if we’re not addressing that, right? Then I had an experience in the States with my own children and I thought… well, human rights, children’s rights.”
Angelina Jolie says she couldn’t recognize the child abuse situation in her family
She also added,
“I… I’m still in my own legal situation,” she stammers. “I can’t speak about that.”
The actress also mentioned that she feared for the safety of her entire family.
“Often you cannot recognise something in a personal way, especially if your focus is on the greatest global injustices, because everything else seems smaller. It’s so hard. I’d like to be able to have this discussion and it’s so important…”
Angelina Jolie talks about her divorce from Brad Pitt
Angelina Jolie also directly mentioned the divorce.
“I’m not the kind of person who makes decisions like the decisions I had to make lightly. It took a lot for me to be in a position where I felt I had to separate from the father of my children.”
The actress did not elaborate much on the violation of her children’s rights, but it was clear that she was referring to the flight incident with Brad Pitt that ultimately caused their divorce. This proves that the incident did take place, and the actress is still dealing with its aftereffects.
