The Batman franchise will get a new animated addition in the form of an animated movie for HBO Max. Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios (Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires) was announced by HBO Max Latin America during the 37th Guadalajara Int’l Film Festival (FICG). Batman Azteca will be a Spanish-language animated film marking the first-ever collaboration between Warner Bros. Animation, Particular Crowd, and Mexico’s Anima.

Batman Azteca will have the DC superhero against the setting of Aztec Mexico and engages viewers in the mystifying culture of Mesoamerica. The animated feature will revolve around the character of a young Aztec boy, Yohualli Coatl, whose father was a village leader named Toltecatzin and is murdered by Spanish Conquistadors. Later Yohualli runs from Tenochtitlan to warn King Moctezuma and his high priest of the death of his father.

The synopsis of the Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios says, “Using the temple of Tzinacan, the bat god, as a lair, Yohualli trains with his mentor and assistant, Acatzin, developing equipment and weaponry to confront the Spaniard invasion, protect Moctezuma’s temple, and avenge his father’s death.”

Rick and Morty director Juan Meza-León will helm the Batman Azteca project. The director took on to instagram to confirme the news, writing, “Batman Azteca. Its finally out! // Por fin salio! Very excited and honored to be part of this. Todos en la producción somos fans de Batman. Asi que esperamos que se emocionen tanto como nosotros! Una historia original que fusiona una version alterna de la Conquista, con los personajes ficticios d Ciudad Gotica. Se imaginan..? Ya veran!”

Anima’s José C. García de Letona and Fernando De Fuentes will serve as producers alongside Chatrone’s Aaron D. Berger and Carina Schulze for the Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios. The production for the animation movie will be done entirely in Mexico and will have top regional talent and the region’s unique antique culture.

Nothing much else has been revealed about the project. No official date has been given for the release of the animated feature, Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios (Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires)
