“He doesn’t get 10 percent, F**k that”: Matt Damon Gets No Sympathy From James Cameron For Losing $250 Million, Might Get a Role in Avatar’s Franchise
James Cameron’s Avatar was the highest-grossing movie of all time when it was released in 2009. The movie made $2.79 billion at the worldwide box office beating Cameron’s Titanic as the highest-grossing movie. Avatar‘s success was more due to the 3D technology they used in the movie than the cast. However, it was revealed in 2019 that Cameron almost signed the biggest actor on the planet for the role of Jake Sully. Matt Damon was approached by Cameron for the role and he declined to do it due to commitments on a Jason Bourne movie.
Damon turning down Avatar can be considered the worst deal in the movie industry. He was also offered ten percent of the movie’s profits for Avatar.
Matt Damon lost $250 million by turning down Avatar
James Cameron first offered the role of Jake Sully to Matt Damon instead of Sam Worthington. He said, “I don’t need a name for this, a named actor. If you don’t take this, I’m going to find an unknown actor and give it to him, because the movie doesn’t really need you.” He further said that he will give Damon ten percent profit of the movie if he took the part.
However, Matt Damon was more committed to doing work in the Jason Bourne franchise. Therefore, he turned down the role. Damon once revealed in a 2019 interview, “I’ve left more money on the table than any actor actually… So that sucked and that’s still brutal.”

In a recent interview, James Cameron took a dig at Damon. He said, “Matt Damon is beating himself up over this. And I really think you know, ‘Matt, you’re kind of like one of the biggest movie stars in the world, get over it’.” Cameron further explained that he understood that Damon had to work in the Jason Bourne movie. The interviewer asked if he has any plans to cast Damon in a future Avatar sequel. Cameron replied, “Must do it. We have to do it so the world is in equilibrium again. But he doesn’t get 10 percent, f**k that.”
After waiting 13 years for the sequel, fans have gone crazy over Avatar: The Way of Water. The movie has done great over the weekend and has made approximately $67.4 million so far and counting.
