Tom Cruise Ridiculed Brooke Shields’ Battle With Depression
After giving birth to her first daughter Rowan Francis Henchy in 2003, Brooke Shields released her mémoire Down Came The Rain: My Journey Through Postpartum Depression. Shields recalled her struggles with not feeling any “motherly instinct” after giving birth and touched upon the seldom-discussed issue.
Documenting her journey through the process of getting help and medication to deal with postpartum depression, the actress battled her issue. Despite being widely praised for her candid revelation, the 57-year-old was openly ridiculed by her Endless Love (1981) co-star Tom Cruise.
Having different opinions, Cruise called her dependency on medication, “Ridiculous and Dangerous”. Being a part of Scientology, a religion often known to reject drug-altering medications, Tom Cruise slammed the actress with his conservative opinions.
Beginning with, “I’ve never agreed with psychiatry, ever.” Cruise went on to ridicule Shields for losing her career due to her dependency on medications. “I care about Brooke Shields because I think she is an incredibly talented woman, (but) look at where her career has gone.” Cruise blurted. Expressing his care for Brooke Shields, Tom Cruise called the actress naive about psychiatry.
The Aftermath Of Tom Cruise’s Rant
Openly ridiculing Brooke Shields in an interview, Tom Cruise stated, “The thing that I’m saying about Brooke is that there’s misinformation, okay. She doesn’t understand the history of psychiatry.” Feeling disrespected by Cruise’s conservative opinions, Shields addressed them and stated, “After Tom Cruise’s interview…I feel compelled to speak not just for myself, but also for the hundreds of thousands of women who have suffered from postpartum depression.”
Calling Cruise’s interview a “ridiculous rant”, Shields openly slammed the actor stating, “Comments like those made by Tom Cruise are a disservice to mothers everywhere.”
“To suggest that I was wrong to take drugs to deal with my depression and that instead I should have taken vitamins and exercised shows an utter lack of understanding about postpartum depression and childbirth in general”. Brooke Shields stated.
Getting a lot of pushback after Shields addressed his opinions, Tom Cruise was bound to apologize. Thus, making a surprise visit to Shields’ house, Cruise apologized for his statements. “He came over to my house, and he gave me a heartfelt apology, and he apologized for bringing me into the whole thing,” Shields mentioned.
She further added, “I didn’t feel at any time that I had to defend myself, nor did I feel that he was trying to convince me of anything other than the fact that he was deeply sorry. And I accepted it.”
Tom Cruise’s representatives later confirmed Shields and Cruise healthily mended their friendship, through apology and heartfelt conversations.
