Fans who have watched Past Lives are very excited not only for a rom-com directed by Song but also for the fact that the movie has Johnson, Pascal, and Evans in the lead roles. Dakota Johnson, however, jokingly shared that she’s probably done with Pedro Pascal after he never let anyone on set forget about her Marvel debut.

Dakota Johnson talks about working on Materialists with Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans

In an interview with Josh Horowitz for Happy Sad Confused, Dakota Johnson touched upon her experience of working with Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans for her upcoming rom-com Materialists. She shared that whenever she looks back at the shoot, the most love in her heart is what comes to her mind, adding that she loved working on the movie.

Dakota Johnson added that it’s one of those special moments in her life that she thinks in her work that she felt inspired in every moment. The actress added that she felt connected to the co-actors, the entire cast and crew, along with the director, Celine Song, and that it was just wonderful. She was asked if she knew Pascal and Evans before signing on for the movie, to which she shared that she knows Pascal very well but she met Chris Evans on the set.

This led to the host asking Johnson about Pascal’s upcoming Marvel debut as Reed Richards on The Fantastic Four: First Steps, to which she said,

Everybody knows; he won’t let anybody forget it. I know everything about his diet and his workout routine.

Johnson’s sarcastic tone when stating that Pascal couldn’t stop bragging about his Marvel debut comes off as funny, especially when her Marvel debut, i.e., Madame Web, tanked awfully at the box office. Directed by S.J. Clarkson, Madame Web was her feature film directorial debut, and upon release, the movie received negative reviews. The movie was deemed the worst comic book movie ever made, and it holds about an 11% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.

In her interview with Bustle, when Johnson was asked about the negative reception the movie received, the actress stated that she would probably never do anything like that again. Johnson mentioned that she does not make sense in that superhero world, and she knows that now.

Dakota Johnson on what pushed her to direct Loser Baby

Dakota Johnson is making her directorial debut with the short film Loser Baby and recently spoke to Variety at TIFF 2024 about what made her step behind the camera to direct the movie. She said,

It wasn’t immediately that I was going to direct it. But then I got quite jealous of somebody else directing it because all my friends were going to be in it. So it was mostly just me feeling left out and possessive. That is what made me decide to do it.

Talia Bernstein not only stars in the movie but has written it as well and shared with the publication that she wrote it to give an honest depiction of gay and queer relationships and what they can look like. Johnson further added that it’s important to see different kinds of relationship dynamics and sexualities and know that it’s okay. The actress noted that every single person is just trying to figure it out.

When asked about the title of the movie, she said that they just happened to come across the title after Blake Lee in their group text called Talia a ‘loser baby’. In her interview with Deadline, Johnson was asked if she was going to direct a movie in the future. She said,

I loved making this so much, and I think it felt incredibly natural and intuitive to me. I am open to making more things, and I don’t know at this stage exactly what. I feel like I have a lot of growth in that department and a lot to learn, and I by now think I’m ready to go do that, but I could also change my mind about it tomorrow.

Dakota Johnson said she encouraged the cast to lean into a lot of improvement to push them a little bit further. Loser Baby premiered at Toronto Film Festival 2024 on September 7, 2024.

There has been no date announced for the release of Materialists.
