- Helaena Targaryen's character differs slightly from the book.
Prequel to HBO’s very popular and beloved fantasy series Game of Thrones, Ryan Condal and author George R.R. Martin created House of the Dragon. The series set almost 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones shows the events that led to the decline of House Targaryen.
With its second season’s finale recently premiered, House of the Dragon has also acquired a place in the hearts of the audience and the critics, especially with exceptional performances by the actors. The show has been appreciated for its storylines, background score, visual effects, and character development. Season 2’s finale sets up the foundation for what is to come in the upcoming season, and a theory has just connected House of the Dragon with Game of Thrones.
Helaena Targaryen connects House of the Dragon with Game of Thrones
Based on the events mentioned in George R. R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon Season 2 recently premiered, setting up a foundation for the war that is to come. Interestingly, season two also established Helaena Targaryen as the dragon dreamer, but how is she connected to Bran Stark from Game of Thrones when it takes 200 years after HOTD events?
Portrayed by the very talented Phia Saban, Helaena Targaryen, slightly differs from the character from the book to what the audience saw on-screen. Her prophecies not only serve as Easter egg but also set up a basis for what is going to happen in the show. According to ScreenCrush, throughout seasons, it has been shown that Helaena has a gift of prophecy, and she has been seen muttering to herself.
In season two, the audience saw Daemon Targaryen’s encounter with a weirwood tree in the godswood of Harrenhal, which has a face carved into it, called a heart tree. When Daemon touches the tree, he goes into the past and future, getting a glimpse of the events of Game of Thrones. Matt Smith, who plays Daemon on the show, goes on to see how House Targaryen is connected to the prophecy of Song of Ice and Fire. When he finally reemerges, his perspective on Rhaenyra and the thrones changes, and he gives up on trying to control his fare.
Very similarly, in Game of Thrones, Bran Stark, after becoming the Three-eyed Raven, becomes passive and let things unfold the way they had always been planned. He avoid interfering and now coming back to Helaena Targaryen, who is always seen muttering to herself somehow appears in Daemon’s vision, telling him about what he had just seen and what role he has to play in the war that is coming. This raises the question, ‘Was she talking to herself or someone else?’
The theory explains that Three-Eyed Raven and Greenseers are capable of looking at the whole period in history. Because the show loves to have a connection, it can be assumed that Helaena Targaryen was talking to Bran Stark and showing him the Targaryen history and their past and future. However, the audience has to wait to learn about Helena Targaryen’s true powers which will be explored in season three.
Phia Saban explains Helaena appearing in Daemon Targaryen’s vision
Phia Saban has been appreciated for her exceptional work on the show Helaena Targaryen, and she recently spoke to Variety about her character. She explained,
The present is a little too painful to live in for now, so she’s managed to step more forthrightly into this otherness—and that’s why this moment felt so clear to her. She is not fighting it as much anymore.
Upon talking about her appearing in Daemon’s vision, the actress mentions that she was excited to film that sequence because she had this sort of fantasy that it was going to be trippy and she was coming out of an egg and crawling over. The actress noted that Helaena’s scene with Daemon is left up to the audience on what they think about that. She noted,
Maybe she’s a projection of something she wants to tell himself, especially since he hurt her so much with her son and everything. From a psychoanalytical perspective, maybe it’s all about him, and maybe it’s not that literal.
During the interview, she added that she would very much like to fly with her dragon Dreamfyre, and she thinks that they have a lovely relationship and connection.
House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones are streaming on HBO Max.
