Besides her roles in Tim Burton’s gothic and fantastical movies, Carter is also quite popular for portraying Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter film series. The actress might have veered away from the original depiction of the character in author J. K. Rowling’s books, but she still managed to capture the hearts of millions. Now that Potterverse is getting a reboot, she is quite sure that she will not be asked to pick up the walnut wood wand one more time.

Helena Bonham Carter was typecast as the lead actress in several period dramas and she was not very comfortable with that particular label. She later became popular for portraying women of a peculiar nature. She has had the experience of portraying both do-gooders and villains, and she is phenomenal at both.

One of the most popular villains she has played is Bellatrix, a Death Eater who was widely known for her madness, sadism, and unwavering loyalty to Voldemort. She captured the character’s chaotic, unhinged nature, blending dark humor with vicious cruelty. Not to mention Bellatrix’s sadistic nature which was made obvious through her twisted delight in causing pain and chaos.

Years after the original film series came to an end, a series based on the books was announced. During an interview with Bustle, when asked if Carter would want to return to portray Bellatrix again so far, she said:

I don’t think they’ll come near me since I’m in the original one, but never say never.

So, The Crown star is not against portraying Bellatrix yet again, but she is wary that the creators would like to bring her back on board. Either way, it is good to know that she is still interested in the role.

Carter’s portrayal of Bellatrix was highly praised. There are some rather memorable scenes from the movies in which the character stands out. One such scene is when the evil witch tortures Hermione Granger in 2010’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. Another such memorable scene is in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 where Bellatrix and Molly Weasley duel each other with Molly screaming, “Not my daughter, b**ch!”

During her conversation with Bustle, Carter also revealed that her portrayal of the character was really from the books.

I didn’t actually get Bellatrix from the novel, particularly. She wasn’t really there on the page — certainly her actions and what she did, but not in description and the childlike aspect. There were lots of ingredients that I just infused in her, basically because I was really bored. I’d just had a child, and this was my only part, and I just threw everything at it.

The Academy Award-nominated actress said that the actress who would be playing Bellatrix in the series should make the character different from the films by doing it the way it is designed in the books.

The Harry Potter films are available for streaming on Max.
