James Gunn’s take on Task Force X, The Suicide Squad, is finally here. Anyone, who has seen the movie, will wonder about the possibilities of its sequel. Even the reactions and reviews have been prominent so far.
While there is no such official news on the sequel has rolled yet, there is a possibility in the works. James Gunn has echoed a bit of what the follow-up could be about in the future, and here is how we have concluded it.
Will there be any Suicide Squad 2?
There have been zero official statements released from the maker’s end on the sequel of Suicide Squad. However, the DC Films President, Walter Hamada, has indicated that James Gunn will return soon with another project for the franchise. Even James said that he has recently discussed another DC project with the makers beyond Pacemaker and The Suicide Squad.
Walter said: “Gunn is always welcome back, whatever he wants to do. He really has a vision, and he’s a great partner with us. Whenever he wants to come back, we’re ready for him. He’ll be back. We have more stuff planned.”
The project seems to be a stand-alone as of now, but soon it might begin with another plotline based on the surviving members of the Squad. These might include Harley Quinn, Ratcatcher 2, Bloodsport, and King Shark. They might begin blackmailing Waller with the truth behind Project Starfish. Suppose the makers make up their minds to go ahead with a follow-up project on Suicide Squad. In that case, it is unlikely for the past characters to return again as Task Force X. As a matter of fact, Peacemaker and Weasel both survived. It is evident from the post-credit scene of the film. Thus, they could be the possible candidates for the third part of the Squad.
Director James said in an interview that “I’ve had ideas, actually.” He also stated that: “If I did a sequel, it’s not like, ‘Hey, let’s assemble another team and let’s do this!’ It would be very different.” Whatever the makers decide to do the next, one thing is sure that we could get something really unexpected.
Another sure thing is that director James Gunn is currently working tight with The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The release of the project is dated 2023. Keeping this thing in a loop, it could be expected that the sequel of the Suicide Squad could be expected after the release of the Guardians only.
Further, another spinoff series that is confirmed as of now is John Cena’s Peacemaker. It is heading towards a release on HBO Max. The character seems to be appeared to meet the maker in the Suicide Squad. Still, the ultraviolet crusader seems to live to get a fight another day, as per the post-credit scenes of the project.
With that said, it still remains a doubt whether Peacemaker will be a sequel or a prequel of the Squad. But the post-credit scenes and Gunn’s tweet points that it would be a follow-up to the current project. James Gunn tweeted that: “Exploring the origins’ does not necessarily mean prequel.”
Peacemaker will be an eight-episode long series that will get premiered in January 2022 on HBO Max.
